Job description

The Royal Free Hospital Intensive Care Department is looking for a motivated Senior Clinical Fellow. We would welcome candidates who have at least two years of accredited core medical or an aesthetic training to the level of CT2 or equivalent. Candidates will be expected to have passed the MRCP examination or the Primary FRCA. Applicants should be able to demonstrate an interest in medical education and previous experience in intensive care medicine is essential. The post is best suited for the following candidates:

  • ICM or Anesthetic Trainees looking to take time out of programme
  • Post CCT Trainees looking to develop their experience in ICU
Main duties of the job

Infection control is everyone's responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non-clinical, are required to adhere to the Trust's Infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures and the Health Act (2006) Code of Practice for the prevention and control healthcare associated infections and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the risk of Healthcare Associated infections.

It is the duty of every member of staff to take personal responsibility for the prevention and control of infection, as laid down in the Trust's policies and procedures which reflect the statutory requirements of the Hygiene Code.

  • To work in close collaboration with the Infection Control Team.
  • To ensure that monitoring of clinical practice is undertaken at the agreed frequency.
  • To ensure that the ward environments are cleaned and maintained to the highest standards; ensuring that shortfalls are rectified or escalated as necessary.
  • To ensure that all relevant monitoring data and issues are provided to the Directorate's Governance structures.

About us

The Royal Free Hospital has a total complement of 50 Critical Care beds (mixed level 2 and level 3), including an 8 bed Post-Anesthetic Care Unit, a 12 bed Enhanced Perioperative Care Unit and an 11-bed liver critical care unit. All medical and surgical specialties, with exception of neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery and ECMO are covered. The renal unit at the Royal Free provides services for the whole of the North Central sector. Tertiary specialist services include liver transplantation, hepatobiliary (HPB), plastic, colorectal and vascular surgery, and infectious diseases. We admit approximately 2800 patients each year and senior medical cover is provided by 24 Consultants, who provide a 24-hour cover worked in blocks to provide continuity of care. Job responsibilities
  • 1.1 Resuscitation of the sick patient
  • 1.2 Communication with the multi-disciplinary team
  • 1.3 Criteria for admission and discharge from critical care
  • 1.4 An EBM approach to, and an application of care bundles, to the management of critically ill patients.
  • 1.5 Recognition and management of the critically ill patient
  • 1.6 Recognition and management of acute medical emergencies
  • 1.7 Supporting the sick patient to prevent further deterioration and hence the need for admission to Intensive Care
  • 1.8 Circulatory support, advanced respiratory support and renal replacement therapies
Person Specification
  • Sufficient experience in Intensive Care Medicine Successful completion of CT2/IMT2 year or similar
  • Demonstrate an interest in post graduate teaching
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, the public and colleagues and treat others with compassion dignity and respect.
  • Experience in Simulation
  • Ability to organise and prioritise personal work load
  • Flexibility enthusiasm positive and helpful attitude
Education and professional qualifications
  • Ability to build good relationships and work collaboratively with staff at all levels
