Job summary

A large NHS trust in the West Midlands is seeking a Senior Registrar in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The role involves managing complex caesarean sections, leading out-of-hours shifts, and supporting high-risk antenatal clinics. Job description

This post would benefit a post CCT/CESR or ST7 in O& G who wishes to develop an interest in complex obstetrics. It provides the opportunity for the holder to develop skills in managing complex caesarean sections (eg. fibroids, placenta praevia), surgical management of major obstetric haemorrhage, and birth planning for women with high BMI, previous abdominal surgery, or PAS alongside our Consultant lead for complex obstetric surgery.

This post includes attendance in high‑risk antenatal clinics, elective caesarean section lists, gynaecology theatre, and the opportunity to complete a SITM in pre‑term birth prevention, supportive obstetrics, or pregnancy care.

We would expect the post holder to possess skills detailed on the RCOG Training matrix ST1‑7 and be competent at leading out‑of‑hours shifts as a Senior Registrar.

The holder will contribute to a 48‑hour EWTD full shift rota; the remainder of the job will consist of general middle‑grade duties on the Labour Ward and emergency gynaecology, allowing the successful candidate to maintain their skills in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Main duties of the job
  1. Support the inpatient service in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at New Cross Hospital.
  2. Outpatient workload: duties involve antenatal/gynaecology clinics and elective operating theatre lists.
  3. Research, education, audit and continuing professional development:
    • Take responsibility for continuing professional education in accordance with guidelines set out by the appropriate college/faculty/professional body.
    • Initiate and participate in research and audit programmes in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
    • Work in collaboration with colleagues in developing skills to provide new ways of working across different professions, organisations, i.e. community/primary care.
  4. In conjunction with colleagues, ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.
  5. Duties will involve labour ward and emergency gynaecology cover, antenatal/gynaecology clinics and elective operating theatre lists. The holder will be responsible for the clinical care of Obstetric and Gynaecological patients under supervision as necessary.
  6. The holder will be responsible for the maintenance of proper case records and investigations on patients, and correspondence with General Practitioners and others as required.

Person Specification
Experience
  • Minimum of 7 years' experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and evidence of commitment to the specialty.
  • Able to undertake on‑call work on the senior registrar tier in Obstetrics/Gynaecology
    • Perform competently – rotational instrumental birth, intermediate level caesarean section (eg. at full dilatation, gestation 28‑32 weeks).
    • ERPC – repair of obstetric anal sphincter injury (corresponding with RCOG training matrix ST1‑7).
Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • Full GMC registration.
  • MRCOG.
Management & Leadership Skills
  • Experience of teaching including skill drills.
  • Good organisational ability and a willingness to be flexible in accordance with the demands of team working.
Desirable
  • Completed PROMPT course.
Research & Audit
  • Evidence of clinical research, audit, guidelines and service improvement projects.
Ability & Skills
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies.
