Job Summary
Senior Accredited Clinical Coder – Band 5 with 15% Reward & Recognition (R&R) Payment.
The Trust is seeking to appoint an Accredited Clinical Coder with the national award held for at least two years. This exciting opportunity allows the coder to develop skills, support the Clinical Coding Manager, and improve communication between coding staff and clinicians to deliver high‑quality, timely clinical coding.
Key Responsibilities
- Abstract, analyse and translate complex clinical information from patient records into nationally recognised codes with a high degree of accuracy.
- Enter coded data into the Trust’s systems, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and accurate financial reporting.
- Provide coding cover across all specialties during periods of absence while maintaining quality standards.
- Act as lead contact for designated specialties, communicating complex queries to medical staff and ensuring consistency of coding information.
- Mentor junior coders through coaching, motivation, and training.
- Collaborate with Clinical Coding Team Leaders to develop and implement training plans for trainee coders.
- Organise daily workload efficiently, meeting personal coding targets and supporting the team to achieve high standards within agreed time frames.
- Assist in maintaining local and national coding policies, contributing to the development of local variations.
- Participate in audit processes, reviewing external audit reports, documenting findings, and implementing action plans.
- Support implementation of new initiatives and changes to work practice, and promote a learning environment.
- Keep up to date with national coding conventions and updates to medical terminology.
- Monitor stock levels within the department and place orders as required.
Qualifications
Essential: Accredited Clinical Coder Qualification (ACC). Demonstrated commitment to personal development.
Desirable: A-Level or equivalent in a logical/analytical subject; Degree or equivalent; European Computer Driving Licence.
Experience
- Extensive experience of Clinical Coding procedures and conventions across a wide range of NHS specialties.
- Team working experience to meet coding deadlines.
- Experience implementing changes in clinical coding practice.
- Mentorship experience (desirable).
- Experience working with clinicians to drive change and service improvement (desirable).
Skills
- Expert knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
- Specialist understanding of ICD, OPCS, and relevant local variations.
- Comprehensive knowledge of patient administrative and other clinical systems.
- Strong IT skills and ability to learn new systems quickly.
- Excellent organisational, planning, and prioritisation skills.
- High accuracy and strong typing skills.
- Data protection and confidentiality awareness.
- Ability to analyse and communicate complex coding rules to others.
