Job summary

Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Senior Clinical Coder (ACC) to join our centralised Clinical Coding Team. This full-time, 37.5 hours per week hybrid role focuses on accurate and timely coded data for use by the Trust and secondary users.

The Trust uses Cerner EPR; NCCQ preferred but considered if experienced. Successful candidates will pass a 2-hour practical coding assessment and demonstrate extensive knowledge across specialties in line with national guidelines.

Qualifications

  • NCCQ Qualification or equivalent experience in clinical coding.
  • Experience with electronic patient records and coding practices.
  • Understanding of ICD10/OPCS4 coding guidelines and national policies.

Responsibilities

  • Hold the NCCQ and demonstrate extensive expert knowledge of complex coding across all specialties.
  • Conduct clinical coding across all specialties in line with local and national policies.
  • Ensure accurate, timely coding to support clinical governance and national reporting.

Job description

We are currently looking to recruit a Senior Clinical Coder (ACC) to join our centralised Clinical Coding Team, committed to providing accurate and timely coded data, for use by the Trust and secondary users. As a key member of the department you will be responsible for ensuring high standards of coding accuracy, efficiency and compliance with national guidelines. This is a full time, 37.5 hours per week, hybrid clinical coding role.

The clinical coding department of Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is responsible for determining the clinical coding of around 12,000 episodes of care per month. The Trust provides a full range of hospital specialties, supplemented by a significant number of regional and national specialist services.

The trust has a fully electronic medical record (Cerner EPR) and all clinical coding is undertaken from electronic source documentation.

The NCCQ (National Clinical Coding Qualification) is preferred and considered essential to apply for this post; however, we are open to considering applicants who have relevant experience but do not hold the qualification.

Candidates will be required to take and pass a 2 hour practical clinical coding assessment should they reach the second stage of the interview process.

Job responsibilities

The post holder is responsible for extracting, collating and coding clinicalinformation, often highly complex in nature, relating to the diagnoses andoperations for admitted care patients. This requires the application of all complex and routine coding rules andconventions pertaining to ICD10 (International Classification of Diseases)and OPCS4 (Classification of Interventions & Procedures), incorporatingpublished national standards. The post holder is expected to apply local and externally acquired knowledge of how clinical coding directly effects areas such income generation, clinical decision making, Information Governance, nationally reported clinical performance indicators and mortality statistics, directing and assisting others in good day to day practice and achievement of Key Performance Indicators. Participation in training and professional development programmeincorporating self-directed study to keep up to date with changes in bothnational standards and local policies. Trust-wide promotion of the clinical coding function, with clinical staff.
