Job summary

WSP is seeking a Rail Civil Engineering specialist to join our growing team in the UK. You will work from offices in Leeds, Manchester or London, delivering civil designs for stations, depots, and lineside infrastructure while growing towards Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) status.

You will benefit from tailored mentoring, structured development, and opportunities to lead technical outputs across multiple projects in a collaborative environment. Hybrid working available.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering accredited by Engineering Council.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Member of ICE or nearing Chartered or Incorporated status.
  • Experience delivering multi-disciplinary engineering projects from initial studies through to detailed design.
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation and guidelines (DMRB, Eurocodes, Codes of Practice).

Responsibilities

  • Deliver Civil Engineering design for Stations & Platforms (new & existing), Depots, level crossings, canopy refurbishments, lineside civils infrastructure and more.
  • Grow the team, contribute to strategic bidding, support line management and continuous improvement.
  • Prepare technical outputs to the highest standards in line with WSP’s quality management system.
  • Collaborate with Engineers, Technicians, clients and contractors to deliver smart, effective solutions.
  • Lead development of drawings, reports and specifications to meet programme milestones.
  • Champion WSP’s SHEW culture and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Scope and specify surveys, lead site surveys as required.

  • Join our thriving Rail Civil Engineering team and work from one of WSP’s modern & collaborative office spaces in Leeds, Manchester, or London.
  • Advance your career with supported progression toward Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) status or further strengthen your existing CRE capabilities through tailored mentoring and development.
  • Deliver the Civil Engineering design for Stations & Platforms (new & existing), Depots, level crossings, canopy refurbishments, lineside railway civils infrastructure, ancillary / minor civils structures and much more.
  • Play a key role in growing the team, contributing to strategic bidding, effective line management, and continuous business improvement initiatives.

  • Tackle engineering challenges head-on in a supportive & mentored environment. Collaborating closely with your team, clients, and contractors to deliver smart, effective solutions.
  • Support and lead in the development of drawings, reports, and specifications, working collaboratively with Engineers and Technicians to meet key programme milestones.
  • Carry out the essential design outputs (calculations, design, risk assessments, etc.) supported by the wider team members to produce a high-quality design output.
  • Champion WSP’s Safety, Health, Environment and Wellbeing (SHEW) culture, ensuring full compliance with regulations and promoting a safe, supportive workplace.
  • Scope and specify surveys, in addition to supervising or leading site surveys, as necessary.

  • Provide technical support into assigned projects and be expected to guide/mentor the design team to achieve its deliverables. Projects being delivered will be for a range of clients, including Network Rail, Contractors, Developers & HS2

  • Opportunity to work under mentorship to develop and undertake CRE responsibilities on Rail projects. Similarly, there is an opportunity to work under mentorship as a CEM depending on experience.
  • Operate in a multi-disciplinary environment and delivering projects in a Common Data Environment (CDE).

What We Would Be Looking For You To Demonstrate…
  • A Bachelors or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related subject accredited by the Engineering Council.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers or nearing Chartered or Incorporated status.
  • Experience in delivering and managing all stages of multi-disciplinary engineering projects from initial studies through to detailed design.
  • Working knowledge of the relevant legislation and guidelines including the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, British and European Standards, Eurocodes and Codes of Practice.
