Senior Civil Engineer

Location: Leicester, East Midlands

Overview

This is an excellent opportunity to take a leading role in delivering a varied range of civil and infrastructure schemes across Leicestershire and the wider East Midlands. As a Senior Engineer within the Civils Team, you will work on projects ranging from small highway improvements to large‑scale residential and commercial developments. Typical designs include all access junction forms (roundabouts, signalised junctions, ghost‑island right turns, and simple priority junctions).

Our client is currently engaged in multiple high‑profile developments within both the private and public sectors. For the right individual, this role offers an opportunity to grow within a strategically important area of the business.

Ideal Candidate

We're looking for a highly skilled and motivated Senior Civil Engineer who can bring technical expertise, leadership, and project management capability to our client's civils team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent qualification).
  • Strong experience in highway and infrastructure design, including roads, access junctions, and drainage strategies.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects from concept through to detailed design.
  • In‑depth knowledge of designing roads (vertical and horizontal alignments), junction layouts, and flood risk assessments.
  • Around 8 years of post‑graduate experience in civil engineering design.
  • Experience delivering Section 278 and Section 184 detailed designs.
  • Working knowledge of local authority and National Highways design processes and requirements.
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and support junior engineers and technicians within the team.
  • A collaborative approach, with excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • High attention to detail and a commitment to producing quality technical work.
  • Proficiency with design software including AutoCAD, Civils 3D, Vehicle Tracking, KeyLINES, Flow or MicroDrainage.
  • Motivation to progress towards Chartered Engineer status (ICE / CIHT / CIWEM).
Technical Knowledge & Experience
  • National design standards and best practice (DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN1/20, NRSWA, etc.)
  • Adoption agreements for roads and drainage (S278, S38, & S104)
  • Highway and drainage adoption processes and legal requirements
  • Comprehensive understanding of AutoCAD, Civils 3D, Vehicle Tracking, KeyLINES/SIGN/POST, and Flow or MicroDrainage
  • Strong communication and report‑writing skills
Key Skills & Attributes
  • Good time management and organisational skills with the ability to maintain good records
  • Experience managing tasks and delivering projects on time and to budget
  • Ability to mentor junior team members
  • Strong technical report writing ability
  • Chartered status or working towards Chartered status (CIHT / ICE / CIWEM) would be advantageous
Additional Experience
  • Experience of public realm design, active travel, cycling infrastructure improvement schemes, major highways design, and/or utilities coordination would be advantageous
  • Experience of site monitoring or supervision roles would be beneficial, along with the ability to produce fee proposals
