Job summary

A leading engineering services firm is looking for a Civil Engineer to join their team in Glasgow. This role focuses on ensuring safety in nuclear projects by developing and managing engineering design substantiation. Candidates must have over 5 years of experience in civil/structural design and ability to produce technical justifications within high-risk sectors. Your Mission

The Civil Engineer will work as part of a multi‑disciplinary engineering team within a Client's Approving Authority, primarily supporting operations and future programs at the client sites. The role involves working alongside Mechanical, Building Services, and Electrical Engineers to author, develop, assess, and maintain Engineering Design Substantiation. The goal is to ensure that Design Intent, Critical Safety Functions, and Safety and Operational Requirements are met in accordance with current best practices and regulatory standards.


Key Responsibilities


  • Develop, assess, and manage Design Substantiation documents.

  • Lead the development and control of design changes and concessions.

  • Present design substantiations to safety committees.

  • Produce and maintain EIMT schedules, procedures, and records to support the safety case.

  • Prepare and review Periodic Review of Safety reports.

  • Provide expert engineering advice to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Conduct Independent Technical and Peer Reviews (ITA/IPR).

  • Apply both general and specialist knowledge to integrate emerging technologies.

  • Use practical and theoretical methods across all project phases in high‑risk/nuclear environments.

  • Deliver robust technical justifications for civil/structural design changes in safety‑critical contexts.


Qualifications

Essential


  • 5+ years of experience in Civil/Structural design.

  • Proven ability to produce technical justifications for civil/structural design modifications in high‑hazard industries.

  • Skilled in applying theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, and manage engineering processes in nuclear/high‑risk environments.

  • Strong foundation in general and specialist engineering knowledge, utilizing both existing and emerging technologies.


Desirable


  • Experience in a similar nuclear environment.

  • Familiarity with safety case development techniques, such as HAZID/HAZOP studies.

  • Civil/Structural Engineering degree.

  • Incorporated engineer (or equivalent experience).

  • Chartered engineer (or equivalent experience).
