Job summary

Fairhurst LLP in Glasgow seeks an experienced Senior Civil / Infrastructure Engineer to lead highway, drainage and external works design across development sectors. You will manage projects, mentor junior staff and liaise with clients and authorities to deliver integrated infrastructure solutions.

The role requires strong design and project management skills within a consultancy, with a track record of delivering high-quality outputs and maintaining professional standards.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Chartered or near Chartered with ICE or equivalent.
  • Strong civil engineering consultancy experience in highways, drainage and external works.
  • Working knowledge of UK design standards and RCC packages.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, AutoTrack, PDS, Civil 3D and related tools.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, coordinate and deliver highway, drainage and external works designs from feasibility to detailed design and approval.
  • Produce technical reports for planning applications (FRA, drainage strategies, viability).
  • Manage projects and work packages across multiple commissions with budget and quality control.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and technicians; coordinate inputs from design teams.

Job description

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Civil / Infrastructure Engineer to join our Glasgow office. This opportunity would suit someone who can demonstrate strong civil engineering experience within a consultancy environment, with particular capability in highway, drainage and external works design across a range of development sectors.

The successful candidate will work in one of the UK’s leading private engineering consultancies, providing integrated infrastructure solutions for a wide range of clients. The role requires technical confidence, strong communication skills, client-facing capability and the ability to manage multiple projects, while supporting and mentoring less experienced colleagues.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical & Design
  • Prepare, coordinate and deliver highway, drainage, levels, external works and associated civil engineering designs from feasibility through to detailed design and technical approval.
  • Use design packages such as AutoCAD, AutoTrack, PDS, Civil 3D, Site 3D, MicroDrainage, Causeway Flow and/or other civil engineering software to develop accurate drawings, models and calculations.
  • Apply relevant UK design standards and guidance, including highway and drainage requirements, Sewers for Scotland, Section 56 Agreements and full RCC packages.
  • Produce and review technical reports and supporting documents for planning applications, including Flood Risk Assessments, Drainage Strategies and Assessments, and Site Viability assessments.
Project Management
  • Manage projects and work packages, balancing priorities across multiple commissions while meeting agreed programmes, budgets and quality standards.
  • Coordinate inputs from internal and external design teams, ensuring deliverables are complete, consistent and issued on time.
  • Support project planning, resourcing, risk management, fee forecasting and project reporting.
  • Take ownership of assigned projects and provide clear direction, support and guidance to junior colleagues.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Liaise with architects, clients, local authorities, contractors, statutory bodies and other professionals throughout project delivery.
  • Represent Fairhurst professionally in meetings, workshops, site visits, networking events and other external engagements.
  • Communicate technical information clearly to clients, stakeholders and multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships, supporting repeat business and the wider promotion of the company.
Quality & Compliance
  • Check calculations, specifications, drawings and reports produced by others in accordance with Fairhurst’s operational and quality procedures.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant legislation, standards, approvals processes and client requirements.
  • Maintain clear records, assumptions, design decisions and auditable technical outputs.
  • Undertake site visits to monitor progress against specifications and highlight issues to the contractor, client and/or project manager as required.
  • Provide support, mentoring and technical guidance to less experienced engineers and technicians.
  • Contribute to a positive team culture, sharing knowledge and supporting professional development across the civil engineering team.
  • Demonstrate strong teamwork, self-motivation and the desire to promote Fairhurst from within.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Qualifications & Professional Requirements
  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered, or near Chartered, status with a recognised professional institution such as the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
  • Strong civil engineering consultancy experience, including highway, drainage, external works and infrastructure design across development sectors.
  • Working knowledge of UK design standards, technical approval processes, Sewers for Scotland, Section 56 Agreements and RCC packages.
  • Experience using AutoCAD, AutoTrack, PDS, Civil 3D, Site 3D, MicroDrainage, Causeway Flow and/or comparable design packages.
  • Full clean UK driving licence.
