To offer a psychoanalytic perspective to the work of the 0‑25 community team, providing specialist psychotherapy assessment, treatment and formulation for children, adolescents and young adults with severe, complex and persistent mental health problems, carers and families. Working autonomously in line with professional guidelines and Trust policies and procedures.

To support and promote the development of services aligned to the cultural values of the service and the organisation and to behave consistently with these values. Supporting the delivery of services which are culturally sensitive, equitable, and accessible.

To provide expertise as an independent practitioner in at least one highly specialised clinical field involving complex clinical judgement.

Job responsibilities

1. CLINICAL

Ensure CYPYAF receive high quality psychotherapeutic assessment, consultation and intervention, based on clinical knowledge and expertise.

Deliver interventions that are effective, coordinated, collaborative, and delivered in accordance with the Trust values.

Receive regular clinical supervision in accordance with good practice guidelines.

Provision of expert high quality clinical assessment, and written or verbal formulation, contributing to a coherent care plan.

Provision of psychotherapeutic interventions using appropriate therapeutic models, as part of an agreed care plan (either as the key intervention or as part of a multidisciplinary package of care) to children and young people and young adults with complex and multiple problems.

Provision of effective and proactive case management, including ongoing monitoring of the effectiveness of treatment, and including the safe management of clinical risk including suicidality, and safeguarding issues, in accordance with Trust policies and sound clinical judgement.

Provide high quality consultation and advice, to the MDT and to a range of professionals working in targeted and universal settings, as directed.

To provide consultancy/advisory services in respect of psychotherapy treatments to other staff within the service and to other agencies.

Maintain appropriate case notes, care plans and correspondence in line with service and Trust policies and procedures. Maintain an accurate up-to-date diary of activities in Outlook, and enter all appropriate data on to the Electronic Patient Record in a timely manner.

To provide specialist assessment reports as required.

To carry out joint work as required with colleagues of the clinical team, contributing to other forms of treatment such as family therapy and group work.

2. RESEARCH, AUDIT & GOVERNANCE

To support and undertake audit as appropriate within the service.

To support and undertake research as appropriate and in line with research governance frameworks.

To utilise theory, literature and research to support evidence based practice in individual work and work with other members of the service, division and Trust.

To communicate research findings through reports and presentations, as appropriate.

To maintain a coherent approach to Clinical Governance within the post-holder’s designated areas of responsibility and contribute to its provision within the department.

To make known to the Consultant Psychotherapist/Psychotherapy Programme Lead any circumstances which would be inconsistent to a safe standard of practice.

To ensure there is appropriate reporting of clinical incidents in line with policies and procedures.

To participate in any clinical audit or quality management process agreed within the service.

Maintain high standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data entry and recording and report writing demonstrating robust information governance.

3. TEACHING, TRAINING & SUPERVISION

Contribute to specialist training of other professions working within the client group within the service and within related agencies.

Contribute to reflective practice groups within the service.

To contribute to the clinical supervision of staff if required.

4. SERVICE EVALUATION & DEVELOPMENT

To contribute to the evaluation, monitoring and development of the Psychotherapy Service and the multi-disciplinary community team.

5. CONTINUED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Enhance and develop appropriate skills through regular supervision from a more senior Psychotherapist in accordance with good practice guidelines.

Ensure continued professional development and maintain a record of such activities in accordance with the Association of Child Psychotherapists code of practice.

To participate in annual appraisal in line with Trust guidance.

Person Specification

• Qualification as a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist (clinical doctoral level)
• Membership of the Association of Child Psychotherapists
• Postgraduate Diploma or Masters Degree
• Knowledge of child care issues and legislation including Safeguarding.
• Knowledge of mental health Legislation
• Theoretical and practical knowledge of specialist practice and procedures.
• Communication/Relationship skills: Ability to work with non verbal children and adolescents. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients of all ages, in a highly antagonistic, hostile and emotive atmosphere where there are significant barriers to acceptance of ideas or help because of the multiple factors involved in assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with highly complex mental health needs. Ability to work in and manage groups
• Analytical & Judgement skills: Ability to work innovatively and autonomously within this highly specialised area of work To analyse complex situations and make appropriate judgements. Judgement involving highly complex facts and situations requiring analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options.
• Planning & Organisational skills: To work with competing priorities and deadlines To be able to plan complex care plans involving the patient, family, multi-disciplinary team and other stakeholders as appropriate.
• People Management/Leadership/Resources Ability to work in groups To be able to contribute to multi-disciplinary training sessions including reflective practice across professional groups
• IT skills: Ability to complete Care notes and letters to a high standard
• Physical skills: Ability to frequently sustain considerable highly concentrated physical, mental and emotional effort under highly stressful and complex situations, in physically constrained positions for lengthy periods of time (at least one hour at a time).
