Senior Control & Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer – AtkinsRéalis
Lead and deliver high‑quality C&I design solutions across a diverse portfolio of engineering projects in the UK. The role requires deep instrumentation knowledge, strong leadership, and the ability to guide multidisciplinary teams through complex design and delivery phases.
Design Leadership
- Lead the development and review of P&IDs in collaboration with process engineering teams.
- Select and specify field instrumentation, ensuring suitability for application and compliance with project requirements.
- Develop and review instrument data sheets, loop diagrams, and control philosophies.
Control Systems Engineering
- Lead the design and documentation of PLC, DCS, and SCADA system architectures, including I/O allocation, communication protocols, and network topologies.
- Develop and review control system specifications, covering hardware, software, and integration requirements.
- Guide the development of control room layouts and HMI/SCADA interface designs, ensuring ergonomic, operational, and cybersecurity best practices.
Safety and Regulatory Compliance
- Facilitate and contribute to HAZOP studies, SIL assessments, and other safety‑related reviews.
- Ensure all designs meet relevant industry standards, regulatory requirements, and client specifications.
- Support the implementation of functional safety principles.
Project Delivery and Documentation
- Compile and maintain instrument indexes, I/O lists, and signal schedules.
- Develop and review technical documentation for procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
- Provide technical leadership during installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
Team Collaboration and Mentoring
- Work closely with electrical, mechanical, and process engineers to ensure integrated and optimised design solutions.
- Mentor and support junior and intermediate engineers, promoting knowledge sharing and technical development.
- Act as a technical point of contact for clients, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Relevant experience in C&I engineering, including leadership roles in design and delivery.
- Proven experience with PLC/DCS/SCADA platforms such as Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider, ABB, or equivalent.
- Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD or similar design tools.
- In‑depth understanding of IEC, BS, and other relevant engineering standards and regulations.
