Media Technology & Operations is a group that is passionate about building and supporting technology to enable storytellers to connect, entertain and inform audiences everywhere. The CNN London Bureau

MTO team focuses on the broadcast and IT technology needs of our CNN partners for newsgathering, programming and digital.

Responsibilities
  • Provides expert operational support for broadcast and IT systems in a live, high-pressure news
  • environment, ensuring reliability and performance across critical infrastructure.
  • Work flexible shift patterns, including late finishes and weekends, adapting to the demands of a 24/7 news operation and maintaining readiness during peak production hours.
  • During major technical incidents and breaking news, take the initiative to delegate tasks effectively, ensuring swift resolution and minimal disruption.
  • Proactively lead projects focused on resolving technical issues, renewing equipment, and expanding
  • infrastructure, while thoroughly documenting each stage of development. Installing and configuring systems and using advanced tools to manage and interact with production environments.
  • Maintaining production hardware such as news cameras and related equipment.
  • Maintains strong communication with both local and remote teams, sharing knowledge, updating stakeholders, and keeping documentation and ticketing systems current.
  • Manage vendor relationships by understanding support contracts and providing feedback to improve the usability and functionality of production systems.
  • Supporting junior staff, especially apprentices, is a key part of the role, offering peer training and guidance to foster team development and technical growth.
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity specialists to secure broadcast and enterprise infrastructure and use monitoring tools to identify opportunities for technological improvement.
  • Organize upgrades within ITIL frameworks and manage technology logistics, including asset tracking and maintaining spare equipment to meet business needs.
Requirements
  • 10 to 15 years' experience in a related area.
  • Educated to BSc degree (or equivalent) in Broadcast Engineering, Media Technology, Computer Science
  • or a related field.
  • A professional networking certification (e.g., Cisco CCNA) is highly desirable, along with any recognized
  • cloud infrastructure certification.
  • An understanding that we support a news organisation that is on-air 24 hours every day.
  • A flexibility to work a shift pattern which may include unsociable working hours.
  • Some major newsgathering events may require infrequent travel for engineering support, including occasional international travel.
  • Passionate about wanting to pursue a career in technology with an interest in news media.
  • Experience of ITIL processes.
  • Self-starter who is not afraid to get dirty and take on anything that comes their way.
  • Strong communication skills, ability to explain a situation and set expectations.
  • An ability to multi-task.

Onsite Working - This role is advertised as Onsite, meaning all working hours and days (regardless of shift pattern) will be carried out at the place of work.
