Job description
Overview

The postholder reports to the Head of Haematology and Blood Transfusion and provides operational leadership for a laboratory team and quality management within Blood Transfusion.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage Biomedical Scientists, staff rota and training.
  • Maintain departmental quality management, assets, audits and non-conformances.
  • Prioritise samples, perform assays, enter results and authorise release according to SOPs.
  • Maintain efficient blood component and product stock system and submit weekly stock returns.
  • Adhere to Trust, departmental policies, ISO 15189 and MHRA guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Blood Transfusion Team on complex transfusion issues.
Technical Responsibilities
  • Knowledge of GMP, Blood Transfusion techniques and LIMS.
  • Perform tests, check validity, troubleshooting, housekeeping and analyser maintenance.
  • Report incidents via SHOT and SABRE.
Person Specification
Education and Training
  • MSc in Haematology/Blood Transfusion or equivalent (master’s level).
  • State registered with the Health & Care Professions Council.
  • Evidence of CPD.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Detailed knowledge of theory and analytical techniques in Blood Transfusion.
  • Knowledge of current trends in Blood Transfusion, ISO 15189 and MHRA.
  • Specialised knowledge of techniques used in Blood Transfusion analyses.
  • Understanding of manual techniques used in blood transfusion.
Experience
  • Experience in all areas of clinical Blood Transfusion.
  • Experience of organising groups of staff.
  • Experience of more complicated techniques used in Blood Transfusion.
