Job summary

A leading healthcare provider in Scotland is seeking a Biomedical Scientist to manage day-to-day technical activities in a laboratory. This role involves providing advice to clinicians, conducting diagnostic investigations, and delivering training to staff. The ideal candidate will have an MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent and state registration with the Health Professions Council. Significant experience in a Cellular Pathology laboratory is preferred.

Job description
The Role

Within this role you will manage and coordinates day-to-day technical activities of a section(s) of the department. You will also be responsible for standards and quality of performance of the section(s) including instrument problem solving and trouble shooting. Processes a broad range of specialist and routine laboratory diagnostic investigations in a Department of a Laboratory using a range of scientific measurements and technical procedures on patient samples. Within the role you will also have to provides advice to clinicians as to appropriateness of tests and time-scales. You will also develop and deliver training and assesses competence of Biomedical Scientists, Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Medical laboratory Assistants.

What we'll need you to bring
  • State registration with the Health Professions Council is mandatory.
  • MSc in Biomedical Science or Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science or equivalent experience (at least 5 years experience as BMS1 and evidence of continued development in relevant discipline).
  • Formal evidence of highly specialist knowledge of a range of discipline specific procedures.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development, for example, a specialised portfolio of development, attendance at specialist courses, training on new instrumentation, learning through reflective practice.
  • For those staff reporting cervical cytology, the NHS Cervical Screening Programme Certificate in Cervical Cytology and compliance with NHSCSP guidelines is mandatory.

Please note for all vacancies where a driving licence is required this must be a full UK/EU/EEA licence.

It would be great if you also have
  • Experience of supervision of sections of a pathology lab and experience of working in specialist areas such as immunocytochemistry, molecular pathology, dissection, cytology
  • Qualification in Leadership and Management or supervision or attendance at relevant management courses
  • Post registration professional qualifications such as specialist diplomas
  • Membership of IBMS
  • Extensive experience post HCPC registration experience in a Cellular Pathology laboratory.
  • Extensive experience of working in a routine histopathology laboratory
  • Experience in managing or supervising staff and workflow within sections of a Cellular Pathology service
  • Wide experience and understanding of audit and Quality Management systems.
  • Experience in training and competency assessment of staff
  • Extensive knowledge of laboratory computer systems, quality management systems and pathology laboratory equipment
  • Understanding of laboratory accreditation including verification and validation of equipment and reagents
  • Wide knowledge of recent developments in Cellular Pathology
  • Knowledge of future challenges and developments in Cellular Pathology
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Skilled in the use of and trouble shooting of pathology laboratory equipment such as microtomes, embedding centres and ICC processors
  • Computer literate with experience of MS software or equivalent software. Ability to manipulate data for audit and statistical analysis
  • Ability to organise own workload to prioritise tasks to meet the laboratories objectives
  • Ability to train and competency assess staff
  • Ability to organise staff and workflow to ensure an effective and efficient service
