A leading healthcare provider is seeking a Senior Biomedical Scientist (Haematology/Transfusion) in Manchester. This role involves supervising laboratory staff, maintaining professional standards, and collaborating within a 24/7 service environment. Candidates must be HCPC registered with significant experience in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. The position operates on a rotational shift pattern.

Qualifications

  • HCPC registered.
  • Completed a specialist portfolio in Haematology and Transfusion.
  • Relevant MSc or Higher Specialist Diploma in Haematology or Transfusion.
  • Considerable experience in Haematology and Blood Transfusion, capable of providing transfusion and haematology expertise and quality.
  • Eligible for band 7 with capacity to work within a 24/7 rotational service.

  • Supervise Registered BMS, Trainee BMS and Medical Laboratory Assistant grades.
  • Provide staffing, workload, performance and costing information to the Chief BMS.
  • Maintain professional standards and work in accordance with ISO standards and SOPs.
  • Exercise judgment and authorize results produced by yourself and others.
  • Use and maintain manual and automated equipment.
  • Collaborate with other Senior BMS staff to monitor departmental staff and resources.
  • Monitor and report staff attendance and sickness.
  • Work within a rotational shift pattern covering a 24 hr/7 day service.
Job description
Role Overview

We are a UKAS and IBMS accredited department serving multiple laboratory sites of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. The position is a senior Biomedical Scientist (Haematology/Transfusion) band 7 opening. We have two band 7 vacancies, one at Oxford Road Campus and one at Wythenshawe, with possibility to work at any MFT laboratory sites on a 24/7 rotational shift pattern.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise Registered BMS, Trainee BMS and Medical Laboratory Assistant grades and coordinate departmental sections on a day‑to‑day basis.
  • Provide staffing, workload, performance and costing information and progress reports to the Chief BMS on a regular basis.
  • Maintain professional standards, working in accordance with ISO standards and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Exercise judgement and authorise results produced by yourself and others (including non‑registered staff).
  • Use and maintain manual and automated equipment, troubleshooting and performing basic repairs.
  • Collaborate with other Senior BMS staff to monitor and allocate departmental staff and resources for maximum benefit over the 24‑hour period.
  • Monitor and report staff attendance and sickness and allocate annual leave.
  • Work within a rotational shift pattern covering 24 hr/7 day service, with the normal pattern Monday–Friday and some weekend cover but not regular night rota.
