Job description

This role can provide additional responsibility inmentoring junior audiologists and providing supervision over them. This allowsyou to share your knowledge within the field to ensure the development ofAudiology. Furthermore, this allows you to master your craft within your givenspecialism in Audiology. Based at St Margarets Hospital, Epping, the post willrequire rotation to other sites (Princess Alexandra Hospital Harlow, Herts andEssex Hospital, Bishops Stortford, Loughton) and possibly more in future. TheAudiologist works in a range of settings with patients suffering from hearingdifficulties, their family and other carers.

Main duties of the job

The Audiologist undertakes diagnostic investigations ofhearing for both adults and children where highly accurate results are vital.Takes on more complex caseloads. Supervises and teaches. Often workingindependently, you will line manage and supervise various clinical staffmembers. Externally, you may have to contact other departments in the Hospitalincluding the Ear, Nose and Throat Department, Central Appointments, the Speechand Language team and other Audiology departments.

Job responsibilities
  • Perform otoscopic examination of the ear canalto assess the condition of the external ear and eardrum. Recognisecontra-indications to further treatment (e.g. perforation, discharge, bloodand/or excessive wax) and refer to the appropriate professional when necessarye.g. ENT staff, GP, Senior Audiologist, Nurse Practitioner etc.
  • Assess the hearing of adults and children overthe age of 5 using a range of specialised diagnostic tests, including: PureTone Audiometry, Acoustic Admittance Measurements, Acoustic Reflex Measurementsand Speech Audiometry, Oto-Acoustic Emissions.
  • Select appropriate hearing aids using PatientManagement System considering hearing aid specifications and outcome measuresto suit individual patient needs. Programme selected digital hearing aid usingcomputerised system and hearing aid software and fit hearing aid and mould topatient.
  • Verify selection and fitting of hearing aidusing Real Ear Measurements.
  • Undertake home visits to housebound patients toprovide a full range of audiological services where access to patients in adomestic setting may be restricted. Undertake visits to in-patients who havebeen identified by ward staff as having hearing problems, providing theappropriate audiological services at the bedside.
  • Supervise and line manage more junior stafftypically students, Band 5 Audiologists and Band 4 Associate Audiologists andapprentices.
