Job description

Do you lead HV and EHV cable system design across complex transmission projects? Are you experienced in developing complete cable system solutions from concept through to detailed design? Interested in taking a senior technical role shaping major power infrastructure across the UK and Europe?

The Opportunity

A leading engineering consultancy is expanding its Power & Energy division and is seeking a Senior Associate Director specialising in Cable System Design. You will drive design leadership on major HV and EHV cable projects, including interconnectors, transmission assets, and grid‑scale infrastructure, delivering high‑impact engineering across the UK and continental Europe.

We would also welcome applications from those in transmission operators, EPC design organisations, cable system manufacturers, distribution utilities, or major renewable developers.

Your duties and responsibilities will be

• Lead the delivery of HV and EHV cable system designs across all project stages, from feasibility through detailed engineering.
• Manage design inputs for cable sizing, cable ratings, thermal modelling, sheath voltage assessment, and electromagnetic analysis using industry software such as CYMCAP and COMSOL.
• Produce and review technical specifications for cabling systems, equipment, and route engineering, ensuring robust and compliant design documentation.
• Provide expert guidance to project teams on all aspects of cable engineering, including HVAC and HVDC system requirements.
• Oversee the preparation of tender materials, technical reports, cost estimates, and engineering deliverables.
• Coordinate with other design disciplines to ensure seamless integration between cabling works, substations, civil interfaces, and installation constraints.
• Support factory acceptance activities, site inspections, and design validation tasks.
• Conduct structured technical reviews, design verification, and compliance checks against relevant regulations and standards.
• Promote strong safety culture and adherence to CDM requirements across design activities.
• Maintain clear communication with engineering teams, subcontractors, and client stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of accurate information.

You will have the following qualifications and experience

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline.
• Chartered Engineer (IET) or actively progressing toward chartership.
• Authorisations such as CDAE or TP141 are advantageous.
• Strong background in HV and EHV cable system design (132kV‑400kV), ideally within the UK transmission and distribution environment.
• Experience managing technical workstreams and delivering high‑quality cable engineering solutions within complex, multi‑disciplinary projects.
