About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Architect (ARB) / Architectural Technician (CIAT qualified) with at least five years’ post-qualification experience to join our team in the Cotswolds.

At James Mackintosh Architects, we help owners of historic buildings to breathe new life into treasured places – restoring, repairing, and adapting them for the future. Our work is about care and creativity in equal measure: bringing together traditional craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and a deep respect for the natural environment.

You’ll work on a rich variety of conservation, ecclesiastical and residential projects, from listed homes to historic estates, helping to deliver designs that are both buildable and beautiful. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys practical problem-solving, has an eye for detail, and takes pride in making old buildings thrive again.

Because many of our projects are in rural locations, you’ll need a full, clean UK driving license and access to a vehicle (business mileage claimable through expenses).

Full-time | 37.5 hours per week

What you’ll be doing

• Lead and coordinate the technical delivery of projects from planning and listed building consent through to construction.
• Prepare and manage detailed drawings and construction information to a consistently high standard.
• Ensure compliance with Building Regulations at every stage.
• Oversee work on site, supporting contractors and clients to achieve the best results.
• Apply your understanding of historic building detailing and repair to develop practical, lasting solutions.
• Manage project timelines and budgets with care and precision.

What we’re looking for

• Chartered Member of CIAT or ARB.
• At least five years’ post-qualification experience, including conservation and residential projects.
• Experience of running conservation projects on site, guiding contractors and maintaining best practice.
• A strong understanding of conservation best practice.
• Strong working knowledge of UK Building Regulations.
• Skilled in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and NBS or similar specification software.
• Proficient in producing detailed technical drawings and clear design information.
• Knowledge of traditional materials and construction techniques.
• Hand drawing and sketching skills to explore and communicate ideas.
• Ability to manage several projects at once with attention to detail.
• Experience monitoring project finances and budgets.
• A collaborative and positive communicator, able to work closely with clients, consultants, and contractors.
• A genuine passion for sustainable reuse of historic buildings.
