In turn, we expect you to bring high ownership and commitment to your work. This is a place where we value trust and high performance, and we'll provide the environment and support needed for you to excel.

About the role and team

Zepz's Identity engineering teams (Signup, Authentication, and KYC) sit at the front door of the product, serving as the first line of defence for a heavily regulated cross-border remittance business. We're looking for a Senior Android Engineer to help modernise the Android experiences that carry millions of customers through onboarding and identity verification every year across a consolidating tech stack.

You’ll work alongside engineering managers, staff engineers, and cross-functional partners in product, design, and compliance to raise the technical bar on our mobile frontend - architecture, test coverage, CI/CD, and release practice - while shipping features customers depend on to move money safely.

  • 5+ years of professional experience shipping production Android applications to Google Play, with deep, hands‑on expertise in Kotlin.
  • Fluency across different Android's UI paradigms such as Compose and xml‑based, and the judgement to know when converting a legacy screen is worth the cost and when it isn't.
  • A strong command of asynchronous and stream‑based state management, and a clear, defensible point of view on app architecture: unidirectional state, dependency injection, and how to keep architectural boundaries from eroding under delivery pressure.
  • Experience in a large multi‑module build - layered or clean architecture, shared and reusable build logic rather than copy‑pasted configuration, and treating build configuration and build performance as first‑class engineering concerns.
  • A track record of evolving a large, long‑lived codebase. You can retire legacy patterns without destabilising the product, sequence modernisation around continuous delivery, and make a defensible case for what to migrate, what to leave alone, and in what order.
  • A rigorous, layered testing strategy. You can articulate what belongs in a unit test versus an integration test versus an on‑device test, you design for testability rather than retrofitting it, and you understand how to keep a large instrumentation suite fast and trustworthy.
  • Genuine ownership of the delivery pipeline, not just code that passes through it. You treat build, test, and release automation as a product, surface with its own reliability bar.
  • A solid command of on‑device security fundamentals: hardware‑backed key storage, encrypted local storage, biometric authentication, device and app integrity signals, code obfuscation, and clear judgement about what should never be stored on a device at all.
  • Experience in a regulated or high‑compliance environment (fintech, healthtech, or similar), with an instinct for the extra care that KYC, authentication, and identity‑verification flows demand.
  • Confident release management at scale - staged rollout, feature flagging, remote kill‑switches, crash and performance monitoring, ANR triage, and a credible rollback plan.
  • Demonstrable experience with the realities of device diversity - behaviour that varies by manufacturer, aggressive background and battery restrictions, minimum‑API trade‑offs, and performance on genuinely constrained hardware.
  • Clear, structured written communication. You can write a design document that carries a multi‑sprint project, and a post‑mortem that stakeholders across the business can actually follow and act on.
  • Confidence with open‑ended, ambiguous problems. You can identify the real issue from partial, conflicting, or vague information, and drive it to resolution with occasional check‑ins rather than close direction.
  • Experience mentoring engineers - through code review, pairing, and technical guidance - and raising the standard of the people around you.
  • A genuine instinct for customer impact, and comfort using data to understand customer behaviour rather than relying on assumption.
What you will focus on
  • Own delivery of team‑level outcomes end‑to‑end on our Android identity flows, from technical design through release to production monitoring.
  • Own the native surface of identity: camera‑based document and selfie capture, biometric authentication, secure credential storage, and the fraud and device‑signal integrations alongside them - including holding third‑party vendors to account when their SDK is the source of a problem on a particular device.
  • Set and maintain the quality bar for the team's codebase: strengthen the testing strategy, tighten the delivery pipeline and build times, uphold architectural boundaries between layers and features, and help bring down change‑failure rate.
  • Mentor engineers on the team and act as a technical point of reference within your domain.
  • Drive incremental modernisation pragmatically - sequencing framework and architecture change around product delivery, and knowing when to fix, when to work around, and when to elevate.
  • Collaborate directly with Product and Design to shape technical approaches and surface risks early, ensuring native Android user experiences are optimized.
  • Use platform‑appropriate techniques to de‑risk deployment: staged rollouts, feature flags, and monitoring you've verified works before you need it.
  • Own performance and reliability on the devices our customers actually use - startup time, memory, download size, and the failures that only appear on low‑end hardware or poor networks.
  • Stay ahead of the platform: annual API‑level targets and store policy deadlines, background and permission restrictions, and data‑safety requirements - planning for them rather than reacting to them.
  • Partner with compliance and risk stakeholders so Android changes to KYC and authentication flows meet regulatory expectations, not just product ones.
Bonus points if you have
  • Experience integrating and troubleshooting third‑party identity‑verification or fraud and device‑signal SDKs, including managing the vendor relationship when behaviour differs across devices.
  • Experience automating architectural enforcement - custom lint rules, static analysis, or build‑level constraints - rather than relying on review discipline alone.
  • Experience with distributed or sharded on‑device test execution to keep a large instrumentation suite viable in CI.
  • Experience with encrypted local persistence and the trade‑offs it imposes on migrations and debugging.
  • Exposure to cross‑platform frameworks such as React Native - enough to work confidently at the boundary between native code and a JavaScript layer.
  • Exposure to multi‑platform engineering contexts to align and maintain consistent cross‑platform product behavior.
  • Experience optimising for emerging markets: download size, offline and low‑bandwidth resilience, and low‑end device performance.
  • Experience in remittance, payments, or other cross‑border fintech.
  • Experience operating under external regulatory oversight (FCA, KYC/AML frameworks, PCI, or equivalent).
AI Literacy & Tools
  • A genuine curiosity about AI and how it can be applied in your area of work — from accelerating analysis and insight generation, to improving how we design and deliver processes and communications.
  • Practical experience using AI tools in a professional context — whether to connect information, draft content, build frameworks, or create insights from data. We want people who actively use AI to increase productivity, not those who are waiting to be told to.
  • Strong AI literacy — an understanding of what AI assistants can and cannot do, how to prompt effectively, and how to critically evaluate AI‑generated output before using it.
  • Awareness of the ethical considerations and responsible use of AI in the workplace, particularly in the context of sensitive data, customer experience, and compliance.
  • Prior experience using Claude (Anthropic) is a nice‑to‑have but not essential — what matters most is that you are genuinely engaged with AI as a tool, comfortable experimenting, and eager to share what works with your wider team.

If you want to join us in our journey to help break barriers in financial access and improve lives globally, there's no better place or time to join.

Our global team of 800+ people is spread across six continents. We aspire to hire the best mix of people from former Olympians to YouTube influencers and we speak over twenty languages. This incredible diversity isn't a bonus; it's the engine that lets us serve the world.
