Job summary

Axle is seeking a Senior Data Scientist, AI Retrieval Systems, to support NIH rare disease research. You will own the data layer, retrieval services, and interfaces, collaborating with clinical geneticists and NIH staff.

This is a remote role based in the United States, with responsibilities spanning ontology integration, semantic search, and live pipeline safety. You will deploy to NIH on-premises/HPC, implement evaluation suites, and contribute to publications with investigators.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s in a relevant field; advanced degree preferred.
• 5+ years building and operating production software or data systems; 2+ years with LLM-powered apps.
• Experience building retrieval systems end to end and evaluating retrieval quality.
• Ability to own a service end to end from design to deployment.

Responsibilities

• Model biomedical knowledge for rare disease research with ontologies and vocabularies.
• Build retrieval-augmented services grounding language in clinical concepts.
• Tune keyword and vector search over large biomedical corpora.
• Develop ranking and relevance layers to surface top results.
• Deliver interfaces using Next.js, React, and TypeScript.
• Deploy on NIH on-premises and HPC Kubernetes environments.
• Create regression tests and maintain system observability.
• Document work for manuscripts, abstracts, and posters with NIH collaborators.
• Collaborate with clinicians and information specialists.
• Own the data layer and retrieval services end to end.
