Overview

Job summary: Applications are invited for a Band 8A Senior AI Engineer post at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. You will join the Clinical Scientific Computing (CSC) team and collaborate with clinical scientists, AI engineers, data scientists, radiologists, clinicians and programme managers, with links to King's College London, AI Centre for Valued Based Healthcare and nearby NHS Trusts. The role focuses on evaluating, developing and implementing digital solutions to facilitate quicker and higher quality access to healthcare for patients, with a strong emphasis on AI.

This is an opportunity for AI developers and clinical scientists to translate research and ideas into clinical practice. The majority of the work is remote; the team meets in person in central London one day per week and holds fortnightly workshops.

Job responsibilities

As a Senior AI Engineer you will be responsible for project delivery from inception to post-deployment surveillance, with strong emphasis on the technical software development aspects of the projects. You will:

• Manage stakeholders, including effectively communicating and regularly engaging with clinical and non-clinical staff, acting in the best interest of patients and service users at GSTT.
• Collect and curate data for AI development and testing and critically appraise their quality.
• Effectively use Version Control tools (GitHub) and program in Python and C# to a high standard, following CI/CD and TDD principles.
• Maintain two Linux servers (upgrading, installing, troubleshooting and managing user access) and work with Docker and virtual environments.
• Work as part of a team, provide and receive constructive feedback, and manage time effectively with the ability to concentrate on long tasks when required.
• Adhere to legislation and guidance on data handling, medical devices maintenance and IT acceptance/deployment in the NHS, and raise concerns if risks are detected.
• Support training programmes including the NHS Fellowship in Clinical AI and the Scientist Training Programme in Clinical Scientific Computing and Clinical Informatics, and help develop junior and temporary staff.
• Contribute to the delivery of training and research translation activities, and participate in external conferences as appropriate.

Qualifications and experience

Essential

• Good (1st or Upper 2nd class) honours degree in a relevant subject.
• Relevant MSc or equivalent.
• Highly developed specialist knowledge across the range of clinical scientific computing and related software systems.
• Extensive experience with software engineering and the full software development lifecycle, including version control, testing, documentation, and continuous integration.
• Able to prioritise and manage own work; able to work independently with initiative and be self-motivated.
• Able to understand and explain relevant legislation, standards and guidelines.
• Able to work effectively within a team and communicate with stakeholders.

Desirable

• Completion of Scientist Training Programme or equivalent; or relevant PhD.
• State registration as a Clinical Scientist (gained or achievable within an acceptable timeframe).
• Experience with SaMD, NHS software deployment, CI/CD, and TDD.
• In-depth knowledge of Python and C#, familiarity with Docker/Kubernetes, server management, and modern SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL).
• Experience with GitHub, software development best practices, and ability to rapidly learn new languages and platforms.
