Job summary

Expanse Learning Wigan School in Wigan is seeking an experienced SEND English Teacher (Secondary) to deliver high-quality, personalised English education to students with SEND, helping them develop reading, writing, speaking and GCSE/Functional Skills, as appropriate.

Role Purpose

The English Teacher will be responsible for delivering high-quality, personalised English education to students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The role aims to ensure that all students, regardless of their starting point, are supported to develop confidence in communication, reading, writing, speaking and listening, functional literacy and, where appropriate, formal English qualifications at GCSE or Functional Skills level.

The post holder will plan and deliver engaging, differentiated and accessible lessons, informed by Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), and will work closely with teaching assistants, therapists and the wider multidisciplinary team to remove barriers to learning. Through a trauma-informed, inclusive and student-centred approach, the teacher will foster positive relationships, promote emotional regulation and behaviour for learning, and prepare students to make progress and achieve as far as possible.

Assessment, Progress & Outcomes

• Assess, monitor and record student progress using formative and summative assessment methods appropriate to a SEND setting.

Supplementary Duties

Candidates will be required to act as a form tutor.

Candidates will be expected to deliver whole school assemblies related to a variety of subjects.

Candidates will be expected to contribute to whole school events upon request of the Headteacher.

Candidates will be expected to undertake additional duties as and when they arise, that may or may not be outside of their usual working hours/pattern, for example parent’s evenings and school trips.
