Job description

Primary and secondary SEN (Special Educational Needs) provisions in Andover and the surrounding areas are seeking experienced Teaching Assistants, particularly those with a background in supporting pupils with autism, learning difficulties, communication needs, and sensory differences. These schools cater for children and young people who require structured, personalised support to access learning and develop essential life and social skills.

You will be working with pupils who may experience:

  • Autism spectrum conditions, including communication differences, sensory sensitivities, and a need for routine

  • Moderate to severe learning difficulties (MLD/SLD)

  • Speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN)

  • Difficulties with social interaction or understanding social cues

  • Cognitive delays that impact working memory, processing speed, and retention

  • Sensory processing challenges, including overload, shutdowns, or avoidance

  • Anxiety related to transitions, unfamiliar tasks, or changes in routine

These pupils benefit from patient, consistent, and highly structured support. You will play a vital role in helping them develop independence, communication skills, confidence, and a positive sense of belonging within the school environment.

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers, SENCOs, therapists, and other support staff to:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support tailored to individual learning needs

  • Implement structured learning programmes and scaffold tasks appropriately

  • Use visual supports, sensory strategies, and communication aids (e.g., PECS, Makaton)

  • Support pupils during moments of sensory or emotional overwhelm using calm, regulated approaches

  • Encourage social communication, interaction, and independent learning skills

  • Assist with personal care routines where required

  • Help maintain predictable, low-arousal classroom environments

  • Contribute to EHCP targets, learning journals, and ongoing SEN assessments

  • Full-time and part-time positions available

  • Term-time only

  • Training opportunities provided (e.g., autism strategies, communication methods, sensory regulation)

  • Pay dependent on experience and the specific setting

  • Location: Andover and surrounding areas

This role is particularly well suited to:

  • Experienced Teaching Assistants, especially those who have worked in SEN, autism, or specialist provisions

  • Individuals with experience in communication support or learning disability services

  • Those confident using structure, routine, and supportive strategies to assist pupils with diverse learning needs

  • Applicants who are patient, calm, and able to adapt to different learning styles

  • People passionate about helping children and young people develop independence, confidence, and essential life skills

If you have experience supporting pupils with autism, learning difficulties, or other special educational needs-or you have strong transferable skills and a genuine commitment to inclusive, learner-centred practice-you are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Enhanced Child Workforce DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain)

  • Right to work in the UK

To apply, please submit your CV. Suitable candidates will be contacted to discuss available opportunities across primary and secondary SEN settings in the Andover area.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ's on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
