Job description

We are recruiting an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to work within an independent specialist SEN school in Partington, supporting children and young people aged 8-25 with Autism, complex learning difficulties, challenging behaviour and additional communication needs.

The school supports pupils who may struggle within a traditional classroom environment, offering a more practical, individualised approach to education. Learning focuses heavily on developing independence, communication, social skills and everyday life skills through classroom activities, outdoor learning and community-based experiences.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supporting pupils with Autism, complex learning needs and behaviours that challenge.
  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support, adapting activities to individual abilities.
  • Supporting pupils who may become dysregulated, using positive behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.
  • Encouraging communication through visual aids, PECS, Makaton and other alternative communication methods where appropriate.
  • Helping pupils develop independence, confidence and essential life skills.
  • Supporting practical learning activities, including outdoor education and community-based learning.
  • Working closely with teachers and support staff to maintain a structured, safe and nurturing environment.
What We're Looking For:
  • Previous SEN experience is essential, ideally within a specialist school or alternative provision.
  • Experience supporting children or young people with Autism and challenging behaviour.
  • A calm, patient and resilient approach when managing difficult situations.
  • Confidence supporting pupils with varying communication and learning needs.
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to get involved in practical and outdoor learning.
  • An Enhanced Child and Adult DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to process a new DBS subject to eligibility.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant who enjoys working in a specialist setting where learning goes beyond the classroom.

If you have strong SEN experience, are confident managing challenging behaviour and want to make a genuine difference to young people's development, we'd like to hear from you.

This role is subject to an Enhanced DBS (child and adult workforce), satisfactory references, and full compliance with KCSIE (2026) guidance and safer recruitment standards. Overseas police checks may be required where applicable.
