Job description

Are you an experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) looking for a stable, long-term role within a supportive specialist setting?

Do you have a passion for planning and delivering high-quality, adaptive learning activities for pupils with diverse special educational needs?

Are you seeking a full-time position starting immediately that offers excellent job security and the potential for a permanent contract?

If so, Randstad Education wants to hear from you! We are currently recruiting a dedicated and adaptable Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join a thriving, independent specialist school located in the Retford area (DN22) for the full academic year.

About the School

They are an independent special school situated in a peaceful, rural setting near Retford, providing tailored education for pupils aged 5 to 19 with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC), ADHD, and associated complex social, emotional, and communication needs. Operating with small class sizes and high staff-to-pupil ratios, the school focuses on balancing academic progress with emotional regulation and personal development. Supported by modern classroom facilities, outdoor learning spaces, and a strong therapeutic team, they offer a calm, inclusive environment where every pupil's individual achievements are celebrated.

About the Role

This is a full-time, long-term position starting ASAP for the full academic year, with a clear temp-to-perm pathway for the right candidate. Working as an HLTA, you will play a key role in supporting classroom teachers and leading small group or whole-class learning sessions across the school.

Key duties include:

  • Planning, preparing, and delivering targeted learning activities across foundational and primary/secondary key stages, adapting lessons to meet individual Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) targets.
  • Providing cover for class teachers during PPA time or planned absences, maintaining consistent routines and positive behaviour strategies.
  • Embedding specialised communication and visual support tools (such as PECS, Makaton, and visual schedules) to engage neurodivergent learners.
  • Implementing sensory integration routines and movement breaks to support emotional regulation and focus.
  • Working collaboratively with teaching assistants, therapy specialists, and SENCOs to monitor and record pupil progress accurately.
Skills Required
  • Proven experience working as a Teaching Assistant or HLTA within a UK education setting, ideally supporting pupils with ASC, ADHD, or SEMH.
  • Confidence in planning and delivering small-group or whole-class activities with minimal supervision.
  • Strong working knowledge of adaptive teaching strategies, visual aids, and positive behaviour support techniques.
  • Exceptional organisational skills, resilience, and a patient, empathetic approach to understanding behaviour as a form of communication.
Essential Requirements
  • HLTA status, a relevant Level 4 qualification, or extensive higher-level teaching support experience within a UK school setting.
  • Prior experience supporting children or young people with SEN (ASC/ADHD/complex needs) in an educational or alternative provision environment.
  • An Enhanced DBS check registered on the Update Service (or a willingness to undergo a new check via Randstad).
  • Full eligibility to work in the UK (please note, visa sponsorship is not available for this role).
