Job description
SEN Education and Engagement Specialist

Department: Recruitment - South East

Employment Type: Contract

Location: Hitchin, Hertfordshire

Compensation: £25.00 - £35.00 / hour

Description

Join us in helping children thrive

For children with SEN and SEMH needs, attending school can feel impossible. Too many people, too much noise and too little support can leave them unwilling or unable to attend.

At Fresh Start in Education, we are looking for experienced, committed and resilient people to work on a 1:1 or 2:1 basis with young people with complex SEN or SEMH needs who are currently out of education in the Hitchin area. As an SEN Education and Engagement Specialist, you will design and deliver personalised learning sessions tailored to the child’s interests and needs, including those associated with autism, ADHD, GDD and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH), as well as providing emotional and behavioural support. If you are looking for a flexible, rewarding role with allowances for travel and resources and support from our dedicated teams, we would love to hear from you.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Working 1:1 or 2:1 with children and young people in their homes or other settings in the Oxford area
  • Planning and delivering learning and engagement activities at Primary, Secondary or Functional Skills levels, as well as providing emotional and behavioural support
  • Running sessions during the school day (term time only) that typically last 3 to 5 hours
  • Engaging with students who may have autism, ADHD, GDD, SEMH, sensory or complex needs and helping them achieve outcomes at their pace
Who We’re Looking For
  • Experience (at least 1 year) as teachers, tutors, teaching assistants, SEN specialists and education professionals who have directly supported young people with SEN/SEMH needs
  • A background in Primary, Secondary, Functional Skills or specialist SEND environments
  • De-escalation and behaviour management skills
  • A minimum of 2 consistent weekdays available
  • An up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding and child protection

Familiarity with Makaton, PECS, or other communication strategies along with de-escalation and behaviour management training is an advantage.

What you can expect from Fresh Start in Education
  • £25–£35 per hour, depending on experience
  • Travel subsidy & £15 per day resource allowance
  • Free access to counselling and wellbeing services, pension options, and store discounts
  • Ongoing CPD and training opportunities
  • Dedicated line manager support and inclusion in a supportive, expert team
  • Bank staff role (PAYE), offering both short-term and long-term placements
