Security Services Group (SSG)

SSG is the MOD's Technical Authority for electronic and physical security, providing expert advice, design, installation and maintenance across Government sites with a focus on Secret and Above Secret security levels. It is part of GUARDIAN, positioned within the Standing Joint Command to support UK homeland security and resilience. The group operates an FTE of 325 and is responsible for specialist in‑house delivery of project management, design, installation and 24/7 maintenance of security systems.

About the Role

The position is advertised at 37 hours per week. The Project Manager will focus on onsite Health & Safety (H&S) and Quality & Compliance within the SSG Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) support team, based at AWE Aldermaston with potential travel to Shrivenham Defence Academy and UK Government sites throughout the Reading region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and deliver key Security Projects for SSG DNO/AWE team.
  • Plan projects and resources, including subcontractors, quotes and equipment supply.
  • Act as Document Writer/Technical Author, creating Project (H&S) documents, MS Project & P6 Primavera Schedules, Technical Specifications, Drawings and AutoCAD documentation.
  • Engage in complex discussions and negotiations with SSG Project Managers, clients and external stakeholders, ensuring compliance with H&S, regulatory and licensing requirements.
  • Line‑manage SSG Skill Zone security technicians and subcontractors to deliver projects and maintenance contracts on time, to quality and cost expectations.
  • Provide full financial management: estimating, job costing, invoicing and budget management, reporting to the SSG Regional Team Leader.
  • Interpret and develop SSG Operations and client requirements, supporting the team’s functional solutions.
  • Conduct regular project audits to identify H&S improvements or compliance gaps and recommend enhancements.
  • Support overseas project delivery, including detached duty for meetings, progress updates and installation/commissioning activities.
  • Maintain knowledge of British, European and Government Standards relating to security, QA and H&S policies.
  • Undertake all job‑related administration accurately and timely.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, standards and guidelines for electronic security systems, including “Nuclear” licensing requirements.
  • Conduct thorough assessments of project sites to evaluate H&S compliance and implement corrective actions.
  • Use Microsoft 365 Office packages (SharePoint, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Carry‑out primary on‑call duties and act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all aspects of Electronic Security.
  • Present Toolbox talks and provide bespoke system training.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Recognised engineering background, apprenticeship or qualifications relevant to Intruder Detection Systems, Perimeter Intruder Detection Systems, Video Surveillance Systems and Access Control Systems.
  • Engineering Council or Security Institute membership (desirable).
  • Qualifications: HNC or NVQ/SVQ Level 3, ONC/OND in Electronic Security Systems, or equivalent.
  • Recognised Project Management qualification.
  • Experience of commissioning large complex systems and managing H&S on construction sites.
  • Desirable: Membership of Engineering Council, Security Institute, or relevant certifications.
  • Experience in health and safety, especially on construction sites, and strong knowledge of QA and H&S policies.

Benefits and Salary

Salary: £37,720 per year with an additional market skills allowance up to £1,800 for managers at AWE Aldermaston.

Benefits include: pension contribution at 28.97%, 25 days annual leave (increasing to 30 after five years), equipment (toolkit, laptop, mobile phone), potential company vehicle, parental leave and Defence Discount Service discounts.
