The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) in Richmond, Virginia, is one of the largest comprehensive art museums in the United States. VMFA, which opened in 1936, is a state agency and privately endowed educational institution. Its purpose is to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret art, and to encourage the study of the arts.

VMFA is the only art museum in the United States open 365 days a year with free general admission.

About Security Services:

The Department of Security Services is dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all staff, volunteers, and visitors to the museum and its campus. This includes safeguarding the buildings, property, and art collections from all potential threats. These efforts are carried out through regular patrols, enforcement of rules and regulations, surveillance and monitoring, providing assistance to visitors and employees, reporting suspicious activities, and responding to emergency situations. These activities support the Commonwealth of Virginia’s cultural enrichment goals and align with VMFA’s strategic plan.

General Information:

We are seeking composed and attentive individuals to join our Security Services Department as a Security Associate. This entry‑level position offers a flexible schedule of up to 28 hours per week (minimum 20 hours) with a maximum annual year of 1,490 hours (May 1 – April 30).

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of customer service principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Sound judgment to ensure the safety of artwork and the well‑being of visitors.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in reading and documenting incident details for reporting purposes.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Adaptability in quickly learning and utilizing various computer applications.
  • Capability to walk or stand for extended periods within the galleries. Accommodations considered via the ADA process.
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
Additional Considerations:

Prior experience in fine retail services, hospitality, or private security valued.
