Secondary Teaching Assistant – South Shields (Autism & Communication Needs)

Location: South Shields
Start Date: January
Contract: Full time, long term
Key Stages: KS3–KS4

We’re looking for a Secondary Teaching Assistant to support pupils with autism, communication differences and complex needs in a specialist setting in South Shields. You’ll be joining a team that prides itself on structure, warmth and clear routines to help young people thrive.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Providing classroom support for KS3–KS4 pupils with autism and learning needs
  • Using visual timetables, structured routines and communication strategies
  • Offering calm, consistent support during transitions and sensory regulation
  • Working closely with teachers and therapists to deliver personalised learning
  • Building trusted relationships that help pupils feel understood and safe

What you’ll need:

  • Experience supporting young people with SEND (school, care or youth work)
  • A calm, patient approach with strong communication skills
  • Confidence adapting tasks and using visual/structured strategies

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
