Secondary SEN Teaching Assistant

Location: Gateshead, Tyne & Wear
Hours: 37.5 hours/week, Monday to Friday, 8:30–16:00
Contract: Ongoing
Start: ASAP

About the Role

Our agency is recruiting on behalf of a SEN secondary school in Gateshead supporting students aged 11–18 with SEMH and additional learning needs. We are looking for a dedicated, reliable, and compassionate Teaching Assistant to support students’ academic and personal development. You will work closely with teachers and support staff to create a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
Supporting Pupils:
  • Supervise students to ensure safety and access to learning.
  • Build positive relationships, act as a role model, and respond to individual needs.
  • Promote inclusion, interaction, independence, and resilience.
  • Assist with Personal Learning Plans and provide feedback under guidance.
  • Assist with personal care, social, health, hygiene, and welfare needs.
Supporting Classroom Teams:
  • Prepare classrooms for lessons, support delivery, and tidy afterward.
  • Record and monitor pupil progress, supporting emotional and sensory regulation.
  • Communicate with parents/carers and colleagues as directed.
  • Encourage positive behaviour, self-regulation, and engagement in learning.
Supporting the School:
  • Contribute to school ethos and improvement programmes.
  • Assist with extra‑curricular activities and ensure safe student collection.
  • Uphold safeguarding, child protection, and all relevant policies.
  • Maintain professional standards, appearance, and participate in training as required.
Requirements
  • GCSEs in English and Maths (or equivalent).
  • Experience in SEN or SEMH settings.
  • Patient, resilient, adaptable, and an excellent team player.
