Overview

In preparation for the 2025 autumn season, GB Railfreight is looking for highly motivated individuals to join as Seasonal Operators.

You will be based in Tonbridge until 31st March, with the potential for a permanent Rail Operator role at one of our nationwide depots upon successful completion.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for those seeking operational experience in the rail industry within a safety-critical environment, providing exposure to various roles and colleagues within the business.

Full training will be provided, including Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification and equipment-specific training.

Responsibilities

What will you be doing?

During the autumn leaf-fall season, the national network deploys strategic Rail Head Treatment Trains (RHTTs) to maintain safe railhead conditions. As an RHTT operator, you will be responsible for the safe and effective operation of these units within your region.

You will also carry out tasks such as maintaining locomotive cleanliness, sanding, and ensuring readiness to support depot operations.

This role is ideal for individuals aiming to start a rewarding career in the railway industry.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • UK full manual driving licence (clean)
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment railway standard medical
  • Residence within 45 minutes of the depot

  • Safety conscious: Safety is paramount when working with locos and RHTT units; adherence to safety practices at all times is essential.
  • Comfortable with shift work: The role involves working varied shifts, including overnight hours, with a willingness to work overtime.

  • Basic mechanical/technical understanding: Ability to perform fault finding, reporting, and basic rectification; training will be provided.
  • Ability to maintain concentration: Long periods between stops require sustained focus.
  • Perseverance and flexibility: Adaptability to changing scenarios and perseverance to achieve goals are valued.
  • Ability to pass industry-standard medical: Essential for operational roles within the rail industry.
