Job summary

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a motivated nurse to provide first level assessment and planning of care for cancer patients from admission to discharge. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to meet physiological, psycho-social and cultural needs.

You will document care, set goals, monitor progress, and educate patients for investigations and home care, while remaining vigilant for treatment side effects and ensuring high standards of patient-centred care.

• First level registration is essential.
• Cancer care experience is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Complete first level assessment of patient needs and document on the care plan.
• Plan, deliver and evaluate programmes of care from admission to discharge.
• Identify nursing problems from assessments and plan care.
• Set goals and help patients achieve them through care planning.
• Document and evaluate care and discuss progress with the team.
• Assist with patient education for investigations, treatment and home care.
• Be aware of treatment side effects and minimise adverse reactions.

• To complete the first level assessment of the patient's needs and document these on the care plan, planning, delivering and evaluating programmes of care from admission through to discharge/transfer.
• To gain an understanding of the physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs of the patients with cancer and their families. To develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that the needs of the patient and family are met.
• Using the information obtained from nursing history assessments and from subsequent observations, to identify the patient's individual nursing problems and needs, and to plan and implement care.
• To set goals for the resolution of each of the identified nursing problems, and to help the patient achieve these goals through appropriate care planning.
• To document and evaluate care given and discuss progress, condition and treatment with colleagues, alerting the Sister/Charge Nurse of the patients' changing health care needs.
• To assist with teaching patients in preparation for investigations, treatment and home care.
• To be aware of the side effects of any treatment in progress, and adopt a problem-solving approach to minimise the potentially adverse reactions.

Flu Vaccination - What We Expect of our Staff

At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
