Job summary

Immunocore in Oxford, UK, seeks a Research Scientist to contribute to cross-functional efforts applying ImmTAX platform toward discovery of treatments for chronic infections such as HIV, HBV, and EBV. You will plan, execute experiments, analyze data, and support project progression in a matrixed team.

The role requires a PhD in a relevant field (or MSc/BSc with strong bench experience) and hands-on experience with cell culture, flow cytometry, ELISpot/ELISA, and molecular biology techniques.

Qualifications

  • PhD in virology, immunology, cell biology, molecular biology, genomics or related discipline.
  • 0–2 years of related experience in a bench-based laboratory.
  • Alternatively, a BSc or MSc with significant work experience in relevant scientific areas.
  • Proficient in culturing primary cells and cell lines.
  • Flow cytometry, ELISpot and/or ELISA experience.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, design and execute assignments to meet project goals within defined timeframes.
  • Execute experiments addressing key scientific questions to enable project progression.
  • Utilize cellular and molecular techniques including cell culture, flow cytometry, ELISpots, ELISAs, PCR/qPCR, Next-Gen sequencing.
  • Analyze data, interpret results and make recommendations.
  • Expand scientific knowledge through literature reviews and seminars.
  • Collaborate within a matrixed team and present results at internal meetings.

Key Responsibilities

This position will contribute towards cross functional efforts focused on applying the ImmTAX® platform or other modalities for the development of novel treatments for diseases associated with chronic infections, including HIV, HBV, EBV and potentially other pathogens. The team is involved in multiple stages of the drug discovery and development process, from target discovery to clinical.

The purpose of the role is also to plan, design and execute experimental investigations with guidance from manager to support the advancement of the Company pipeline, process, or technology capabilities.

  • With instruction and guidance from manager - plan, design, and execute assignments to meet project goals within defined timeframes
  • Execute experiments to address key scientific questions and enable project progression, utilizing range of cellular and molecular techniques including some of the following:
  • cell culture, flow cytometry, ELISpots, ELISAs, PCR/DD-PCR/qPCR, Next-Gen sequencing
  • Some work will be conducted in a containment level 3 (CL3 facility) and will require handling of human viruses
  • Analyse data, interpret results, and make recommendations
  • Proactively expand scientific/technical knowledge in relevant fields including HIV/HBV/EBV related disease biology and drug development through review of scientific literature/ conference updates, peer to peer mentoring, and attendance at seminars/conferences in line with company strategy
  • Work effectively in a matrixed team structure, as part of cross functional teams
  • Participate and present results at internal meetings
  • Establish relationships and possible collaborations within and outside of the company
Education, Experience and Knowledge

Essential Qualifications:

  • PhD in virology, immunology, cell biology, molecular biology, genomics or related discipline and 0-2 years related experience
  • Alternatively, a BSc or MSc with significant work experience in relevant scientific areas
  • Worked in a bench-based laboratory environment and proficient in the following key techniques:
  • Culturing primary cells and cell lines
  • Flow cytometry
  • ELISpot and/or ELISA

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge/expertise of Immunology/HIV/HBV/EBV/other chronic infections
  • Basic molecular techniques including PCR, molecular cloning, gel electrophoresis, site directed mutagenesis,
  • Droplet Digital PCR/qPCR
  • NextGen sequencing/Genomics/Transcriptomics
