Science Technician / School Laboratory Assistant

Salary: £25,186 per annum FTE / Actual Salary £20,433 per annum + Benefits

Location: Hedge End, Southampton, Hampshire

Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Working Hours: 35 Hours per Week, 08:00 to 15:30, Monday to Friday, Term Time Only (39 weeks)

JOB OVERVIEW

We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Science Technician / School Laboratory Assistant who will support practical science teaching by preparing equipment, helping to deliver safe lessons and ensuring resources are well organised and ready for use.

As a Science Technician / School Laboratory Assistant you will assist teaching staff during practical work, help maintain apparatus, support curriculum delivery and follow Health and Safety procedures including COSHH/CLEAPSS. You will bring strong organisational skills and a flexible, proactive approach to a busy school setting.

In addition, you will prepare solutions, maintain microscopes and data loggers, support inventory checks and help set up equipment for enrichment activities such as STEM workshops.

DUTIES
  • Setting up Practical Experiments: Prepare and lay out equipment and materials for lessons
  • Cleaning and Clearing Apparatus: Ensure equipment is cleaned and stored safely
  • Maintaining Equipment: Keep apparatus and fittings in safe working order
  • Stock Control: Monitor, replace and organise resources and stationery for laboratories
  • Preparing Solutions: Mix and prepare chemicals and solutions for lessons
  • Supporting Teaching Staff: Assist during lessons and help arrange cover materials
  • Managing Storage Areas: Keep prep rooms and storage spaces clean and organised
  • Supporting Enrichment: Set up equipment for STEM and other enrichment activities
  • Equipment Construction: Build simple apparatus when required
  • Maintaining Technical Resources: Look after microscopes and data logging equipment
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
ESSENTIAL
  • GCSE in Science (A Level in Science preferred)
  • Experience with laboratory equipment in an educational or scientific environment
  • Good subject knowledge in science with strong organisational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong ICT skills and accuracy in handling resources
  • Ability to follow Health and Safety procedures including COSHH
  • Patience, tact and effective communication skills
DESIRABLE
  • A background in science or previous lab experience
  • Experience supporting practical learning in a school setting
  • Experience assisting with equipment for enrichment activities
