Responsibilities

  • Provide effective technician support across Science, Art, Creative & Design, and Hospitality & Catering.
  • Prepare, set up and clear away apparatus, materials, tools and equipment for lessons from Years 7 to Sixth Form.
  • Support teachers during practical lessons, ensuring safe use of equipment and resources.
  • Maintain laboratories, studios, kitchens and stores to be clean, safe and well stocked.
  • Monitor stock levels for chemicals, art materials and tools, and raise orders as needed.
  • Organise storage areas for accessibility and safety.
  • Carry out routine checks on equipment and arrange repairs as necessary.
  • Safely handle, label, store and dispose of materials in line with procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Assist with risk assessments for practical work and follow safeguarding procedures.
  • Liaise with staff on practical requirements and safety concerns.
  • Support departmental administration, including stock records and classroom displays.
  • Contribute to school events and enrichment activities.
  • Engage in CPD and professional development to maintain safe working practices.
  • Undertake other duties in line with the role and contribute to after-school clubs.

The role – Science Technician
  • Provide effective technician support across Science, Art, Creative & Design, and Hospitality & Catering, ensuring practical learning environments are safe, well organised and ready for teaching and learning
  • Prepare, set up and clear away apparatus, materials, tools, ingredients, equipment and resources for practical lessons, demonstrations, assessed practical’s and enrichment activities from Years 7 to Sixth Form.
  • Support teachers during practical lessons and assessments, including assisting pupils with the safe and appropriate use of equipment, materials and resources under the direction of teaching staff.
  • Maintain laboratories, preparation rooms, studios, kitchens, stores and specialist practical spaces so that they are clean, tidy, safe, well stocked and fit for use.
  • Monitor, audit and maintain stock levels for chemicals, consumables, art materials, ingredients, tools and equipment, keeping accurate records and highlighting ordering or replacement needs in good time and within budget.
  • Organise, label and maintain storage areas efficiently, ensuring resources are accessible, safely stored, used effectively and replenished as required.
  • Carry out routine checks on equipment, tools and practical resources, reporting defects, hazards or maintenance requirements promptly and arranging repairs where appropriate.
  • Safely handle, label, store and dispose of chemicals, biological materials, food items and other practical resources in line with school procedures and relevant guidance, including CLEAPSS, COSHH, food hygiene and health and safety requirements
  • Support the completion and implementation of risk assessments for practical work, ensuring safe working practices are followed across Science, Art, Creative & Design, and Hospitality & Catering.
  • Liaise with subject staff regarding practical requirements, stock needs, equipment use and any issues affecting safety, lesson preparation or functionality.
  • Support departmental administration, including resource preparation, stock records, requisitions, technician notes for schemes of work, printing, photocopying, filing and classroom displays.
  • Contribute to the smooth running of practical departments, including support for displays, exhibitions, open evenings, school events and enrichment activities.
  • Engage with relevant CPD, meetings and professional development to maintain up-to-date knowledge of safe working practices, subject-specific requirements and school procedures.
  • Follow safeguarding procedures, undertake required safeguarding training and model excellent professional conduct at all times.
  • Undertake any other duties that are broadly in line with the responsibilities and grade of the role.
  • Assist with the preparation and running of after-school clubs.

The successful candidate will be a hardworking, passionate individual with a technician background and an Enhanced DBS on the update Service.
