Overview

Location: York; Working Hours: 7:00 AM - 2:00 PM (Monday to Friday, term-time only); Break: 30 minutes, unpaid; Salary: £15.00 per hour. We are looking for a dedicated and experienced School Cook to join a friendly and supportive team. The ideal candidate will be passionate about preparing and serving nutritious, delicious, and healthy meals for students and staff. We will also consider a highly experienced Catering Assistant who has a proven background as a chef or in a similar professional cooking role.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, prepare, and cook a variety of fresh meals in line with school menus and dietary requirements.
  • Ensure all food preparation, handling, and storage adheres to strict food safety and hygiene standards.
  • Manage stock control, including ordering, receiving, and rotating food supplies.
  • Supervise and work effectively with kitchen staff to deliver a high-quality, efficient service.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organised kitchen environment at all times.
  • Ensure all meals are prepared and ready for service at the scheduled time.
Requirements
  • Proven experience as a Cook or Chef in a professional catering environment (e.g., school, care home, or restaurant).
  • A valid Enhanced DBS check is essential (or the willingness to apply for one).
  • A Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene Certificate is required.
  • Excellent knowledge of food allergens and dietary requirements.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently.
  • Candidates must be eligible to live and work in the UK.
