School Caretaker – Primary School (January Start)

Location: Oldham
Contract Type: Full-Time (Split Shift)
Hours: Monday to Friday, 6:30am–10:30am and 2:30pm–6:00pm (flexibility considered)

A welcoming and community-focused primary school in Oldham is seeking a reliable and proactive School Caretaker to join the site team from January 2026. This is a long-term, full-time role with a split-shift working pattern, offering flexibility around the school’s opening hours.

This is a vital role that ensures the smooth day-to-day running of the school premises, supporting the learning environment and safety of all staff, pupils, and visitors.

About the Role

As the school caretaker, you will take responsibility for the general maintenance, cleanliness, security, and safety of the school site. You’ll work closely with the Site Manager and leadership team to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for the school community.

Key Duties Will Include:
Site Maintenance & Porterage
  • Carry out minor repairs, DIY projects, and general maintenance of the premises
  • Move furniture, equipment, and resources as needed
  • Set up for school events including assemblies, parents’ evenings, and open days
  • Report larger site issues to the Site Manager promptly
Cleaning Duties
  • Support with day-to-day cleaning, litter picking, and waste disposal
  • Ensure tools, materials, and cleaning products are maintained and stocked
  • Assist with emergency tasks such as spillages and gritting during cold weather
Security
  • Act as a keyholder responsible for unlocking and locking the site
  • Check all doors, windows, lights, and utilities are properly secured
  • Set alarms and respond to call-outs in line with school procedures
  • Conduct routine checks on gates, fences, and locks and report any issues
Health & Safety
  • Maintain a safe environment in line with H&S legislation
  • Monitor risks and take action to minimise hazards on site
  • Support with safe access during adverse weather (e.g. gritting pathways)
Wider Responsibilities
  • Ensure cleaning staff carry out duties effectively and safely
  • Build positive relationships with staff, contractors, and visitors
  • Participate in training, performance reviews, and CPD as required
  • Uphold the school’s commitment to safeguarding and inclusion
What We’re Looking For:
  • Previous experience in a caretaking, site, or facilities role (school-based experience preferred)
  • Strong practical and DIY skills
  • Good understanding of health and safety procedures
  • Reliable, trustworthy, and able to work independently
  • Flexible and proactive attitude, with excellent time management
  • Willingness to undergo relevant training (e.g. first aid, safeguarding, manual handling)
Working Pattern

This role follows a split shift pattern (6:30am–10:30am and 2:30pm–6:00pm), though some flexibility can be offered for the right candidate. Additional hours may occasionally be required for school events or evening functions.
