Job summary

Quast Ltd. is seeking an experienced Safety Engineer to support Acquisition Safety policy for Land equipment in a defence environment.

The role covers System Safety Policy, Governance, Management and Assurance, working within a Safety Engineering Skill Group to sustain through-life safety of land assets. You will produce safety documentation and collaborate with engineering teams.

Qualifications

  • Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics based qualification at RQF Level 3 or international equivalent.
  • Experience providing technical advice and delivering engineering outcomes.
  • Working towards EngTech or RSciTech with a relevant body.
  • Awareness of budgets and contributing to cost estimates for technical services.

Responsibilities

  • Generate technical safety requirements and documentation for subsystems, considering in-service support and costs.
  • Identify and evaluate technical safety data to support project documentation maturity.
  • Follow safety legislation, standards and policies to deliver documentation with quality and interoperability.
  • Contribute to technical risk management at project and programme levels.
  • Support generation, update and review of safety artefacts and safety cases for equipment.
  • Collaborate with subsystem teams on safety requirements.
  • Support safety testing, verification, validation and evaluation.
  • Support safety decisions on through-life support and modifications.
  • Support technical assurance activities in safety engineering.
  • Assist disposal and decommissioning of equipment.
  • Draft recommendations related to the relevant technical area.

Location: Hybrid, circa 3 days weekly in office (Abbey Wood, Bristol, BS34 8JH)
Contract: ASAP to 31/03/2027

Overview

Our customer, a large defence organisation, is seeking an experienced Safety Engineer to support the delivery of Acquisition Safety policy and solutions within a Land engineering and safety environment.

The role involves through-life management of project safety risk, supporting the delivery of safe and suitable equipment, systems and services. The work encompasses System Safety Policy and Governance, System Safety Management, and System Safety Assurance and Audit.

Team Context

The role sits within a dedicated Safety Engineering Skill Group within DE&S, working alongside engineers and other technical specialists to support acquisition and through-life management of Land equipment and systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the generation of technical safety requirements and documentation for subsystems, including consideration of in-service support and associated costs.
  • Identify, collate and evaluate technical safety data to support the management and maturity of project documentation and successful technical outcomes.
  • Work within relevant safety legislation, regulation, policy, processes and standards to deliver technical documentation, taking account of quality, safety, security, sustainability and subsystem interoperability.
  • Contribute to technical risk management activities at project and programme level.
  • Support the generation, update and review of safety artefacts and safety cases relating to equipment.
  • Collaborate with subsystem teams and specialists on technical safety requirements.
  • Support safety testing, verification, validation and evaluation.
  • Support safety decisions relating to through-life support and modification of operational subsystems.
  • Support technical assurance activities within the safety engineering discipline.
  • Support disposal and decommissioning of equipment.
  • Draft recommendations relating to the relevant technical area.
Essential Skills, Qualifications and Experience
  • A Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Mathematics based qualification at RQF Level 3, or Scottish/international equivalent.
  • Experience of providing technical advice and delivering successful engineering outcomes.
  • Working towards professional registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech) or Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) with a relevant professional body or institution.
  • Awareness of financial budgets, with the ability to contribute to business cases and approvals, including generating or reviewing cost estimates for technical services or products.

  • Ability to identify and apply appropriate technical legislation, regulations, standards, policies and processes.
  • Ability to analyse technical information and determine appropriate actions to resolve issues.
  • Ability to prioritise work, make timely decisions and escalat risk appropriately.
  • Effective stakeholder communication and the ability to help resolve conflicting requirements.
  • Ability to identify efficient approaches to processing information and delivering work.
  • Ability to plan and manage workload to deliver at pace.
Additional Information
  • Hybrid role based at Abbey Wood, Bristol, with approximately 3 days per week in the office expected.
  • Current SC clearance required.
