Safeguarding Children in Care Nurse

Are you passionate about supporting children in care and have a professional curiosity to ensure each child's voice is central to everything we do? Do you have experience working with children to help them reach their full potential?

This is an exciting opportunity to join an established Children in Care Team. We are looking for someone who is passionate about children in care, forward‑thinking, dynamic, and creative in their approach. You should be able to work across the Warrington and Halton area.

1 x Full Time – 37.5 hrs / week

1 x Part Time – 22.5 hrs / week

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work with children, young people, their carers and a wide range of professionals across health and social care settings to ensure that looked‑after children and young people (CIC) receive the appropriate services to reach their full potential, as outlined in Promoting the Health and Well‑being of Looked After Children 2022 and the Inter‑collegiate Competencies for Looked‑After Children (2020).

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of health care for CIC and care leavers. The overall aim is to ensure that children in care, care leavers and unaccompanied asylum‑seeking children’s health needs are met and that positive outcomes are achieved for this vulnerable group.

Job responsibilities
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate healthcare for CIC, formulating a holistic health care plan for school‑aged CIC, post‑16 young people and care leavers.
  • To support CIC and their carers with appropriate health advice, information, signposting and referral.
  • To support social work colleagues in ensuring that any health needs identified at children’s initial or review health assessments are promptly addressed with ongoing follow‑up and reviews.
  • To attend new‑into‑care planning meetings and assist with the compilation of information to inform the completion of quality initial health assessments.
  • To attend and/or provide a written report for any statutory CIC health reviews, care‑planning meetings or CSE/Missing‑from‑care strategy discussions for CIC.
  • To ensure that all CIC are up to date with their immunisations and to organise or administer outstanding immunisations in line with the Department of Health guidelines.
  • To establish a drop‑in facility in children’s homes.
  • To monitor emotional health and stability by interpreting SDQs and liaising with the Lead CIC specialist nurse/child’s social worker.
  • To attend meetings on behalf of the Band 7 CIC specialist nurse in periods of her absence.
  • To work in conjunction with the Lead Specialist nurse for CIC in the delivery of CIC training and the ongoing professional development of health professionals, social workers and foster carers.
  • To provide professional leadership and health advice and support to health professionals including health visitors and school nurses and social workers within health and social care settings.
  • To assist and participate in audits improving the quality standards for health services for CIC.
  • To participate in regional and local strategic planning groups within CIC nursing.
  • To support and encourage community involvement in decision‑making and policy-making, including the involvement of children/young people and carers.
  • To work autonomously within own practice, managing a caseload of children and young people in care (school‑aged, 16+ Not in Education Employment or training (NEET), and Unaccompanied Asylum Seekers (UASC)).
  • To undertake comprehensive health assessments on CIC both in borough and those CIC placed within Bridgewater from other local authorities in line with good practice and reciprocal working arrangements.
  • To make clinical decisions to satisfy the expectations and demands of the role, supported by relevant evidence‑based practical theories.
  • To adopt a flexible approach to working which may include travelling out of borough on occasions, or working evenings or weekends, to engage with young people and facilitate their access to health services.
  • To be responsible for recording personally generated clinical observations and maintaining relevant nursing records and reports.
  • To exercise independent prescribing rights in accordance with relevant legislation.
  • To work in conjunction with targeted and universal children’s services to provide health promotion and advice to looked‑after children and young people, including those not accessing mainstream education.
  • To work alongside the lead specialist nurse and named nurse for CIC to support the development, implementation, review and updating of CIC processes and procedures.
  • To conduct professional knowledge acquisition through state registration, continuing professional development, specialist knowledge and experience.
  • To ensure compliance with mandatory training and PREP requirements.
  • To maintain clinical excellence through the ongoing development and enhancement of advanced specialist skills within the service area.
  • To utilise computer literacy skills to manage information systems and enhance presentation skills.
  • To provide specific health‑related training to other services as directed by the Named Nurse or Lead Specialist nurse for Children in Care.
  • To offer clinical support, supervision and shadowing opportunities to health professionals.
  • To develop a personal development and academic profile, undertake clinical audit and development programmes within own specialist area as directed by the Lead Specialist nurse for Children in Care.
  • To establish effective networks with health, social care providers and private care providers and voluntary agencies.
  • To use communication skills to involve children and young people, carers and staff in the development of CIC services.
  • To communicate sensitive information to children and carers that enables joint care decisions to be made.
  • To initiate discussion of complex information when planning care management.
