SACT Day services provide treatments for up to 185 patients per day. This unit treats a range of cancers including breast, prostate, lung, and others. The team delivers systemic anti‑cancer treatment (SACT) with a focus on patient‑centred care.

Clinical Responsibilities
- Assess and prioritise the needs of patients undergoing SACT and their families.
- Ensure safe administration of SACT, managing reactions or adverse events.
- Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with hospital policies.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families and medical staff about care plans and changing needs.
- Provide up‑to‑date information and education to patients and families.
- Incorporate relevant research outcomes into nursing care.
- Evaluate nursing care and communicate changes to medical staff.
- Demonstrate competent nursing skills as required by the unit’s needs.
- Maintain safe practice and adherence to Hospital Policies and Standards.
- Administer prescribed drugs and treatments following Hospital Policy.
- Support SACT outreach sites as required.
- Attain a UKONS (United Kingdom Oncology Nursing Society) passport.
- Participate in clinical governance and risk management specific to the unit.
- Use all equipment necessary for cancer patient care proficiently.
- Prepare patients for safe transfer to ward areas.
- Assist with invasive procedures as appropriate for your level.
- Stand for long periods during shifts and respond to emergency situations such as cardiac arrest.
- Provide emotionally supportive care during cancer treatments.
- Support junior staff caring for very sick or unwell patients.
- Manage exposure to bodily fluids, odours, noise, and interruptions while maintaining documentation accuracy.
- Perform accurate mathematical calculations and multitask effectively.
Managerial Responsibilities
- Provide effective clinical leadership for the team, liaising with the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.
- Deputise for the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse as requested.
- Consider financial aspects to maximise cost‑effectiveness.
- Maintain skill mix, activity targets, and clinical standards to ensure patient safety.
- Conduct individual performance reviews with staff.
- Assist with recruitment and selection of staff.
- Foster a supportive working environment and staff morale.
- Support new ward staff and pre‑ and post‑registered nurses.
- Participate in audit of clinical care and ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Assist with change implementation and professional accountability.
- Attend Clinical Risk Assessments and document incidents in line with Hospital Policy.
- Provide management support to junior staff and act as mentor.
- Manage staffing levels and skill mix on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.
- Address staffing sickness/absence per Trust policy.
- Report to Department Manager/Senior Nursing team on unit affairs.
- Assess conduct and performance of all staff while on shift and report issues.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and staff information.
Education & Development Requirements
- Maintain awareness of current nursing practice and educational opportunities.
- Supervise clinical staff and disseminate knowledge.
- Participate in appraisal programmes with the Senior Sister.
- Collaborate with the School of Nursing on teaching and assessment, in line with NMC guidelines.
- Provide teaching and mentorship to students, newly qualified nurses, and starters.
- Competent in IV training and SACT programme administration (UKONS passport).
- Engage in research and audit impacting practice.
