Job summary

A leading NHS Foundation Trust in London is hiring a Rotational Pharmacy Technician to join a newly established B5 rotational programme. Rotational Pharmacy Technician - Band 5

We have an exciting opportunity to join a newly established and refreshed B5 rotational programme.

You will be given opportunities to work within dedicated teams, consisting of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy assistants to provide a comprehensive service to all areas within the pharmacy department. As part of the programme, you will rotate through core areas of the department and also some newly developed rotations. You will join us as we embark on the delivery of our new Pharmacy 2030 strategy, with members of the Pharmacy Technician team being integral to innovative ways of providing patient care.

You will need to be able to participate in the bank holiday and weekend working rota which will include seven day working and late duty support.

However, you will be an active, enthusiastic member of the rotational programme, participating in MMPT duties in various specialties including but not limited to, Surgery, Cardiology and Oncology and Intensive care wards. You will spend time interacting with patients, doctors and nurses at ward level enabling you to deliver a bespoke service counselling patients, supporting the education and training of others and delivering the best patient care. You'll also get the opportunity to rotate through other areas such as Clinical Trials to support and develop your knowledge of how medicines move from the "bench to the bedside"

You will also work alongside our teams in patient services, in both adult and paediatric teams at the Guys and St Thomas' sites and the Evelina London Children's hospital to ensure that patients get the right medicines, at the right time using our newly implemented Patient Electronic Record, EPIC system.

Job responsibilities

Main duties and responsibilities are to:

  • Perform MMPT duties including medicines reconciliation and POD locker checks
  • Counsel patients and their carers / representatives on the safe use of their medicines
  • Dispense and check controlled drugs, ensuring safe and correct storage and record-keeping.
  • Perform final accuracy checks on clinically screened prescriptions to support timely supply of medicines and support the wider hospital flow
  • Address any queries or concerns a patient, carer, or parent may have about their medication
  • Communicate detailed, complex and sensitive information to patients/carers about drug doses, indications, side effects and efficacy.
  • Lead on the completion of quality improvement projects and implement service innovations
  • Support the Education and Training of other colleagues, including pharmacy assistants, pre-registration trainee pharmacy technicians, trainee and junior pharmacists
  • Support the different pharmacy teams with the operational delivery of comprehensive clinical trials, home care and procurement services
Qualifications
  • NVQ Pharmacy services Level 3 plus an accredited underpinning knowledge (BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent) or equivalent
  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Completion of the Accreditation Checking Pharmacy Technician Scheme (ACPT) or
Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to dispense accurately to set standards
  • Demonstrated ability to counsel and give advice to patients on their medications
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate more complex and sensitive information effectively using clear written and spoken English to overcome barriers to understanding
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly and accurately complete complex routine and non-routine documentation
  • Working with pharmacy software systems, EPIC pharmacy management or equivalent
  • Working in a Hospital or community Pharmacy
Experience
  • Medicines management in a ward based settings - e.g. medicine reconciliation/POD assessment etc
  • Previous evaluated experience of participation in project and audit work
  • Supervising and mentoring pharmacy staff
  • Demonstrated experience of ability to appraise staff and set performance objectives
  • Stock level management and maintenance
