Job summary

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is recruiting a Surgical First Assistant to support the Clyde Robotic initiative at Royal Alexandra Hospital. The post requires either prior SFA training or willingness to undertake this training as a trainee.

The role involves robotic theatre duties, port insertion, docking/undocking, instrument provision, and assisting across colorectal and urology procedures, with a commitment to patient safety and continuous professional development.

Qualifications

  • Registered nurse on the NMC register, or have previously undertaken the SFA training.
  • Significant post-registration theatre experience, including senior practitioner level.
  • Completion of Advanced Scrub Practitioner parts 1 & 2.
  • Understanding of colorectal disease and laparoscopic/robotic procedures.
  • Competent in IT packages (Word & Excel) and committed to CPD.

Responsibilities

  • Train and act as First Assistant in Robotic Surgery.
  • Assist in laparoscopic/robotic port insertion, docking and undocking robotic arms.
  • Provide instruments and retract structures; assist in colorectal/urology procedures.
  • Open pelvic oncological surgery when feasible to support learning.
  • Educate patients pre- and post-operatively; mentor junior staff.
  • Engage in peer review and promote nursing standards within the team.
