Job summary

SpaceAM Limited in Gloucestershire is seeking a mid-weight RF Engineer to design, test and improve low-power RF links and mesh networks carrying sensor data.

You will work closely with embedded, hardware and AI teams on defence and space projects, with BPSS checks and SC clearance requirements. This hands-on, fast-paced scale-up role involves field trials and demonstrations, and requires independence with a small team.

Qualifications

• Degree in electronic engineering, physics or related subject.
• Solid commercial experience in RF or wireless engineering at mid level.
• Strong understanding of low-power radio design and wireless protocols (BLE, 802.15.4, Thread, Zigbee, LoRa).
• Practical mesh networking experience including topology and multi-hop routing.
• Comfort with RF test equipment and bench debugging.
• Good knowledge of antennas, impedance matching and link budgets.
• Able to work independently and in small teams; willing to travel for field trials.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and optimise low-power RF hardware and radio links for sensor nodes.
• Develop and improve mesh networking: routing, multi-hop performance, latency and resilience.
• Conduct link budget analysis and range planning; select antennas and radio modules.
• Support RF front-end and antenna design, PCB layout reviews, and bench tuning.
• Test and characterise radio performance in lab and field with spectrum analysers and VNAs.
• Collaborate with embedded, hardware and AI teams to balance range, data rate and power.
• Support field trials, deploy units and diagnose link issues on site.
• Write test reports and technical documentation; assist EMC/regulatory work.
