Job Summary

Respiratory / Minor Illness Nurse

Thank you for your interest in joining the team at Eldene Surgery. The Practice is committed to delivering high quality patient care which requires us to have a supportive and cohesive team. We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic respiratory / minor illness nurse preferably with experience in asthma/COPD, spirometry and holding minor illness clinics to join our nursing team. The position is available for an immediate start. If you have the required general practice experience, we would be delighted to receive your application.

Job title: Respiratory / Minor Illness Nurse

Reports to: Lead Nurse

Responsibilities
  • Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs.
  • Chaperone and assist patients where appropriate during examinations conducted by another clinician.
  • Follow agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate.
  • Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms.
  • Conduct cross‑site working as required.
  • Participate in respiratory clinics – diagnose, review and manage patients with respiratory conditions.
  • Deliver patient education on inhaler techniques, smoking cessation and personalised management plans.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in minor illness clinics.
  • Work with other health‑care professionals to diagnose, monitor, manage and treat respiratory conditions.
  • Review medication for therapeutic effectiveness.
  • Support patients to adhere to prescribed treatments.
  • Implement and evaluate programmes that promote health and well‑being (e.g. smoking cessation and weight management).
  • Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions.
  • Deliver a quality service.
  • Produce accurate, contemporaneous and complete records of patient consultations, consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Prioritise, organise and manage own workload to maintain and promote quality.
  • Deliver care in accordance with NICE guidelines and evidence‑based practice.
  • Support and participate in shared learning across the practice and wider organisation.
  • Participate in the management, review and identification of learning from patient complaints and significant events.
  • Work within policies relating to domestic abuse and vulnerable people and refer as appropriate.
Qualifications

Essential:

  • NMC Registration
  • A legal right to work in the UK
  • Post‑registration COPD recognised qualification
  • Post‑registration Asthma recognised qualification
  • Spirometry and interpretation or willingness to achieve
  • General Practice Experience
  • Good interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to effectively manage own time and workload.
  • Evidence of problem solving and decision‑making skills.
  • Good team player.
  • Flexible approach.

Desirable:

  • Ability to hold minor illness clinics.
  • Experience in conducting reviews of patients with long‑term conditions.
  • Ability to reflect on own and team practice and make suggestions to improve and enhance team performance.
  • Understanding of health, safety and infection control issues.
  • Familiarity with the SystmOne clinical system.
  • Familiarity with the Ardens templates.
