Job description

Toshiba Europe Ltd has been at the forefront of quantum technology research, particularly in quantum communications and semiconductor quantum devices, for the past two decades. During this time, the company has achieved numerous breakthroughs, including the development of the world's first single-photon and entangled-photon LEDs, as well as the first GHz-operation 1550 nm single-photon avalanche diodes.

We are seeking a Research Scientist to join our team in developing entanglement-based quantum communication systems for future quantum networks. The successful candidate will contribute to the implementation and characterisation of experimental systems for the generation and distribution of entanglement over optical fibre networks. The role will involve quantum light source characterisation, quantum communication experiments, and the integration of advanced photonic and electronic systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in quantum optics, quantum communications, or experimental quantum information science.

Responsibilities:
  • Development and characterisation of entanglement-based quantum communication systems
  • Design and implementation of entanglement-distribution experiments
  • Integration of optical, electronic, and control subsystems for advanced experimental platforms
  • Development of software for experimental control, automation, and data analysis
  • Analyse and interpret experimental results, and contribute to the development of new concepts and protocols
  • Engagement with academic and industrial partners, and dissemination through scientific publications
Essential requirements:
  • PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Proven hands-on experience in quantum optics, quantum communication, or experimental quantum information science
  • Strong understanding of entanglement, quantum networking, or photonic quantum systems
  • Experience in assembly, integration, and operation of complex experimental systems
  • Experience with fibre optic systems
  • Good knowledge of computer control and data analysis programming environments, e.g., Python, LabVIEW, or equivalent
  • Track record of high-quality scientific research and publications
  • Capability of both creative, independent work and working within an interactive team
Desirable requirements:
  • Experience with entangled photon sources and their characterisation
  • Experience with solid-state quantum emitters
  • Knowledge of quantum communication protocols, quantum repeater architectures, quantum memories, or distributed quantum computing concepts
  • Experience with imaging, microscopy, spectroscopy
  • Experience with field trial experiments or proof of concept prototypes
