Job description

Job Title: Research Scientist - Protein

Working Location: Bracknell

Rate: £18.41 per hour

Contract Length: 12 months

Start Date: 19th January 2026

We are looking for a hardworking, motivated individual who is quick to learn and apply themselves to join our dynamic, collaborative and industrious protein production team. This is a one-year contract to support the delivery of a critical protein production process. This role offers the opportunity for the successful candidate to gain hands on experience with an array of downstream processing techniques including protein chromatography and membrane filtration methods.

Role profile and expectations
  • Work as part of a protein production team to deliver gram quantities of purified recombinant protein to support one of Syngenta’s critical commercial projects
  • Provide hands‑on support during this large‑scale protein production campaign
  • Learn and conduct the necessary analytical methods to validate final outputs meet defined specifications
  • Accurately record results to agreed company standards
  • Prepare technical reports, present findings within project groups and be an active communicator within the wider Syngenta scientific community
  • Work safely and with due care to others ensuring compliance with company HSE policies
Essential education & experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant science e.g. Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical or other similar disciplines
  • Good theoretical understanding of recombinant protein expression
  • Good theoretical understanding of chromatography techniques including affinity, ion exchange (IEX), hydrophobic interaction (HIC) and size exclusion (SEC) chromatography
  • Strong evidence of troubleshooting and innovative problem solving
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good communication and planning skills
Desirable experience
  • Master’s degree or 1-2 years’ experience working in a laboratory environment
  • 1-2 years lab experience working in any of the core areas highlighted in the above job description
  • Experience with data management tools (e.g. Benchling) and data analysis software (e.g. JMP)
  • Experience of working with scalable bioprocess technologies e.g. TFF, Hollow fibre
