Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic individual(s) to join our team to undertake the role of Research Performance Analyst. This post is fixed term/secondment for 2 years until October 2027 due to secondment cover. The post holder will support the delivery of high-quality health and social care research across Wales. Working closely with the Research Performance Manager, the postholder will help drive continuous improvement through expert analysis and interpretation of research data, supporting strategic decision-making across the Health and Care Research Wales Support & Delivery service. The post may close early if sufficient applications are received.

Main duties of the job
  • Lead the development and maintenance of business intelligence systems, including the central data warehouse and live dashboards.
  • Produce high-quality, accurate performance reports and visualisations, respond to complex stakeholder queries, and champion innovation in data representation.
  • Have a strong understanding of NHS research operations and a commitment to service development, and communicate technical insights clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Be the first point of contact for queries from stakeholders relating to reporting and business intelligence.
  • Be responsible for answering queries relating to the business intelligence and BI systems, problem solving and communicating where issues arise and answering often highly complex or technical questions on reporting.

Person Specification

Essential Knowledge

  • Educated to degree level in a health/social care or information related subject or equivalent relevant knowledge and experience.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Knowledge and understanding of research in a health and/or social care setting.
  • Expert knowledge of a range of data analysis and presentation tools and techniques gained through postgraduate qualification or via professional experience in a relevant setting.
  • Expert knowledge of the use of NHS research activity data against national Key Performance Indicators.
  • Specialist knowledge and experience in the collation, interpretation, validation, analysis, and presentation of data gained through postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent working knowledge of data analysis and reporting systems, tools and software, for example business intelligence software.
  • Significant experience in specifying and/or documenting data items in systems.
  • Knowledge of legislative requirements relating to data collection, management, and storage (e.g., Data Protection Act/GDPR, Freedom of Information Act, Caldicott Guidelines).

Essential Experience

  • Significant experience in reporting or business intelligence related role.
  • Significant experience of manipulating, querying, analysing and presenting complex data using e.g. Access and Excel.
  • Experience of successfully using project management tools and techniques to manage and support projects.

  • Proven organisational skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex information with a wide range of professionals at different levels with varying IT and information/ business intelligence knowledge and skills.
  • Understanding of statistics and ability to perform statistical comparisons.
  • Excellent computer literacy especially in MS Office applications, email and the internet.
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills; able to analyse, investigate and resolve complex data queries where a range of solutions may be available.
  • Excellent demonstrable attention to detail when handling large volumes of information and data.
