DeepL is seeking a Research Manager for the Production Inference team in a hybrid UK role. You will lead a group of research scientists and ML engineers responsible for reliable, scalable language model serving at DeepL.

You will define the technical direction, review architectures, and balance research rigor with production needs to meet latency and cost goals. The role demands strong leadership, a solid background in production ML, and excellent communication to coordinate across research,

Qualifications

• Experience leading a team of researchers or ML engineers.
• Background in production ML systems with scalable inference.
• Excellent communication and ability to translate complex direction into clear goals.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a high-performing team of researchers and ML engineers, building plans and maintaining high delivery standards.
• Own the team's research and development roadmap for production inference systems, coordinating with senior ICs and stakeholders.
• Act as the primary technical interface between the team and adjacent functions to align research output with product needs.
• Drive reliability, efficiency and cost performance of the model serving stack, including infrastructure evolution decisions.
• Operate with autonomy, defining direction and delivering results in evolving, ambiguous environments.
• Identify and recruit research and engineering talent as the team grows.
