Job summary

Health Informatics Centre (HIC) at the University of Dundee is seeking an experienced Infrastructure Engineer to design, deploy, and manage secure infrastructure across local, private, and public clouds. You will work with researchers and governance teams to deliver performant technical solutions and support AI/ML and HPC workflows.

Role requires degree in a STEM field, experience with cloud/container infra, scripting, and ISO27001 knowledge.

Qualifications

• Degree in computing, engineering, maths, or a related STEM discipline.
• Experience deploying or managing server, cloud, or container-based infrastructure.
• Proficiency in scripting (Python, Bash, PowerShell).
• Understanding of secure cloud computing and information governance.

Responsibilities

• Design, deploy, and manage infrastructure across local, private, and public cloud environments.
• Collaborate with developers, analysts, information governance teams, and researchers to deliver secure and performant technical solutions.
• Build and support virtualised environments, containers, and hybrid cloud architectures.
• Develop, maintain, and enhance HIC's TRE and associated research computing infrastructure.
• Implement AI/ML support, HPC, bioinformatics, imaging and genomics pipelines, and scalable storage/compute solutions.
• Ensure all infrastructure meets ISO27001 standards.
• Contribute to secure workflows for data ingress/egress, including ML model export.
• Provide technical support across infrastructure components.
• Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to stakeholders.
• Take ownership of key work areas, driving continual improvement.

Job description

HIC hosts over 30 years of health data for nearly 20% of Scotland's population and supports secure, privacy-preserving research within our ISO27001-accredited TRE. We are expanding our platform to support emerging needs including AI/ML workloads and hybrid cloud architectures. If you are a skilled infrastructure engineer with a passion for problem-solving, security, and innovation you could be working with the Health Informatics Centre team (HIC - https://www.dundee.ac.uk/hic/) at the University of Dundee.

Your priorities will include:

• Design, deploy, and manage infrastructure across local, private, and public cloud environments.
• Work closely with developers, analysts, information governance teams, and researchers to deliver secure and performant technical solutions.
• Build and support custom configurations, including virtualised environments, containers, and hybrid cloud architectures.
• Develop, maintain, and enhance HIC's Trusted Research Environment (TRE) and associated research computing infrastructure.
• Implement new technical capabilities including AI/ML support, HPC, bioinformatics, imaging and genomics pipelines, and scalable storage/compute solutions.
• Ensure all infrastructure meets strict security, information governance, and ISO27001 standards.
• Contribute to the development of secure workflows for data ingress/egress, including algorithms and ML model export.
• Provide technical support, troubleshooting, and problem-solving across infrastructure components.
• Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both specialist and non-specialist stakeholders.
• Take ownership of key work areas, driving continual improvement and innovation within HIC.

Who we're looking for:

• Degree in computing, engineering, maths, or a related STEM discipline.
• Experience deploying or managing server, cloud, or container-based infrastructure supporting production environments.
• Proficiency in scripting or programming (e.g. Python, Bash, PowerShell).
• Understanding of secure cloud computing, information governance, and managing confidential/sensitive data.
• Familiarity with Linux and/or Windows systems administration.
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools, virtualisation, or containerisation.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical topics clearly.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Proactive, problem-solving mindset with the ability to take ownership of tasks and deliver to deadlines. Desirable
• Experience with public cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP) or hybrid cloud deployments.
• Background in HPC, bioinformatics, research computing, or large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience with genomics or imaging data pipelines.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker, or container orchestration best practices.
• Knowledge of ISO27001 or other information security management frameworks.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git version control, and automation tools.
• Understanding of RDBMS technologies (SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL).
• Experience with monitoring systems such as CloudWatch, Prometheus, or similar.
• Contribution to research projects or academic publications.
• Strong interest in secure system design, root-cause problem analysis, and operational simplicity.
