Job Description:

About the role

The Department of Space and Climate Physics at University College London (UCL) seeks to appoint a motivated Research Fellow within the Astrophysics Group. This position is part of our plan to expand MSSL-UCL’s theoretical research in compact object astrophysics, focusing on neutron stars atmospheric modelling and X-ray spectro-polarimetry. The successful applicant will pursue a vigorous research programme and lead the development of advanced radiative transfer codes to model the spectral, timing, and polarimetric properties of atmospheric emission from strongly magnetized neutron stars.

About you

The successful candidate must possess:

  • Excellent knowledge of a high-level programming language (e.g., Fortran F90-95, C, C++, Python, JAX) in a Linux/Unix environment
  • A solid background in numerical analysis with the ability to translate physical concepts into efficient numerical algorithms
  • Expertise in neutron star X-ray emission and astrophysical radiative transfer

Applicants should have (or be close to completing) a PhD in astronomy, physics, or astrophysics.

Candidates are required to submit: 1) an application form, 2) a research statement (max. 3 pages), 3) a CV with three references (max. 2 pages), and 4) a list of publications. The research statement should summarize your main expertise and achievements, and explain how you meet the project criteria.

For informal inquiries, contact Prof. Silvia Zane.

Additional information can be found in the attached job description.
