Job summary

Lubrizol Corporation in Manchester is seeking a Research Chemist Student Placement to join the Blackley Research Team for a rewarding placement year, gaining hands-on experience in polymer synthesis and organic chemistry within a dynamic research environment.

How You'll Make an Impact

As a Research Chemist Student Placement, you'll join our Blackley Research Team for a rewarding placement year, gaining hands-on experience in polymer synthesis and organic chemistry within a dynamic and innovative research environment. You will contribute to new product development projects, including synthesis and application testing of novel materials against existing and competitive products, allowing you to experience the full product development cycle.

In this role, you will:

• Synthesize and develop novel polymeric dispersants tailored for applications in paints, inks, and plastics.
• Plan and perform synthetic experiments, accurately maintain an up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook, and compose reports.
• Communicate experimental results and findings effectively during team meetings and quarterly presentation sessions.
• Design and execute screening tests to evaluate performance characteristics of newly synthesized materials in various applications.
• Collaborate with colleagues in the research, applications, and process technology departments to share data and progress projects.

Required Qualifications that Enable Your Success

• Currently studying a chemistry-related degree with an industrial placement year and aiming for, or currently achieving, a 2:1 degree classification or above.
• Possess practical laboratory experience gained through university coursework or previous placements.
• Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within a team while also showing initiative and independence on assigned projects.
• Have strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload effectively to meet project deadlines.
• Be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, enabling clear documentation and data analysis.

• Enthusiasm to engage in the entire development process, from candidate identification to application testing and scale-up.
